VETERANS: Discounts nice, but not necessary

Re: “All veterans deserve respect” (letter, 11-10).

My husband and I are both military veterans. Like the letter writer’s spouse, he is disabled and receives VA payments.

Citizens (such as business owners) already pay taxes to support us with disability payments, VA care, etc. Their taxes also keep open the many military bases in our region. That’s why we have such easy access to tax-free shopping at the commissary and exchange with our military IDs.

Discounts from private businesses? That’s not in the contract. Sometimes a person says, “Thanks for serving!” That’s respect. Discounts? Not so much.

Fantastic points…thankfully your husband is getting his VA benefits…my son, Disabled Veteran from Desert Storm, 100% disabled, has been waiting since 1998 and is STILL waiting for his monthly promised $$$. Sometimes our government can hurt our Veterans more than war!
