ELECTION: Adam Smith is no ‘fiscal hawk’

Democrat Adam Smith is in a tight battle with Republican Dick Muri for election as representative for Washington’s 9th Congressional District.

Smith claims to be a moderate Democrat and self-styled “fiscal hawk.” To recount Smith’s record (which is largely absent from any of his campaign ads), our “fiscal hawk” is responsible for voting for the $356 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (aka “bank bailout”) and the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (aka “stimulus”), which has not resulted in any stimulus of the economy save for Smith’s counterfactual arguments that things would be worse without it.

Smith’s coup de grâce, however, was his vote for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), which Smith promised would “bend the cost curve of health care.” The Congressional Budget Office noted on July 17 that the cost curve raised as a result of Obamacare.

In March, Smith acknowledged that health care was not playing too well in some parts of the country – particularly the 9th District, which he purports to represent. As such, he told President Obama that it was not simply a matter of “all hold hands and jump off the cliff together . . . This is going to be difficult.”

Smith deliberately chose to dismiss the will of his constituents and “jump off the cliff” with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Don’t give Smith the parachute for safe landing. Vote for Dick Muri to represent the 9th District.

Only an ignorant electorate would return the socialist democrat party to power in either Washington!!

  2. aislander says:

Not only am I voting for Muri, I sent his campaign some money. I ask anyone who loves freedom, opportunity, and small government to do the same…

  3. truthbusterguy says:

“Fiscal Hawk”!!!!! More like a “Fiasco Hawk”. A total failure and a catastrophe in motion.

He is a hand puppet for Pelosi and we need to show him who he works for.

  4. the3rdpigshouse says:

Smith is an “OH-Bummer ” supporter who has been complicit in the planned “transformation” of a great nation into a bastardized socialist cesspool of forced redistribution of assets!! “OH-Bummer’s” healthcare plan, mortgage bailouts, bank bailouts, cap & tax, and future unprecedented deficit spending will bankrupt our nation by 2020! We will not have a EU or US to bail us out like Greece is being bailed out once we are financially bankrupt!!

The marxist “OH-Bummer” does not care that we will be a financial wreck as that is his plan – to destroy our nation and then recreate it in his distorted anti-American socialist utopia!!! This SOB and his obedient minions must be removed from the government!!!

  5. gerry0416 says:

Smith is like all of the incumbents; concerned only with his job. He, like Patty Murray will say and do anything to stay in office, with no concern for the eventual outcome of his actions.

  6. OKay, okay, we got it. You all hate Smith because he is a Democrat. Your repititious drivel gives NOT GIVE ONE SINGLE REASON to vote for Muri! What has he done as a Pierce County Councilman to warrant a promotion? Absolutely nothing. He has been an obstructionist and a “good old boy” vote from day one. If he is not qualified to serve the the county why would you think he could do better in Washington. Or is this “Peter Principle” in action. Promote the least competent and get rid of him?

  7. the3rdpigshouse says:

Olemag – either you just awakened from a very long sleep or you for some reason refuse to acknowledge that our country is going down the proverbial socialist toilet under “OH-Bummer”!!!

“OH-Bummer’s” projected budget deficits will total $20 trillion by 2020, which is an unsustainable indebtedness that represents 104% of the entire GNP of the country!!! Wake up and smell the stench that is socialist democrat driven and drive these maggots out of government at all levels!

  8. Vote out Smith and Patty Murray. God save America, for our kids, ourselves and the future.

Where was Smith and Murray when Pelosi came to Seattle? Running from their votes, thats where.

  9. jimmyjackson says:

Olemag – you may wish to retake civics. I am a Democrat and I am frustrated with Adam Smith. Smith knew that the 9th District constituency that he supposedly REPRESENTS did not support Obamacare. Instead he chose Pelosi and the Democratic Party leadership over us. US Representatives, in particular are supposed to REPRESENT the will of the governed more so than say the “deep thinkers” (and I say that very loosely) of the Senate. That is the reason why the term in the House is only two years; so thay can be thrown out when they don’t listen!

  10. And here we have another fine example of how the right never stoops to name calling because they are too busy feeding us facts and truthful information.

  11. Congress has the power to tax to pay debt, provide for the common defense, and for the general welfare of the Nation. U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8.

JimmyJ – source and reference for your assertion that the majority of the 9th District did/does not support the Health Care Reform Act.

  12. lgcnelson84 says:

Olemag – So, what has Muri done on the local level?
~ He’s helped keep a balanced budget in pierce county year after year, which is far more than Smith or anyone on the national level can say right now.
~ He led the way on establishing E-verify so that local jobs are garanteed to go to legal American citizens
~ Earlier this year, residents in Roy and McKenna called him up about a rash of burglaries in the area and their desire to do something about it, so he facilitated a town hall with local citizens and law enforcement to discuss options, and the Roy-McKenna Advisory Board was established.
~ He is the most accessible political figure I’ve ever seen, he listens when a resident of the county has a concern, and he works with them to come to reasonable conclusions.

Muri may not have the clout of a national politician, but he knows who he’s working for. I might not agree with his stance on every issue, but I know he believes in what he’s doing, and that he’s doing it for the 9th district. He’ll tell it to you straight whether you like what he has to say or not… and I’d rather have that honesty and intregrity in DC, instead of someone who’s going to talk one way and vote another.

  13. Muri also voted for 21% pay raise for the county coucil. What other county employees enjoyed such a largeness?

  14. lgcnelson84 says:

xring – do a little research on the matter and don’t believe everything attack ads proclaim.

There was far more to it than just a vote and a pay raise. Muri only benefitted from it when he was re-elected… he had no guarantee that the pay increase would affect his own pay until the next election.

  15. 84 – the more part is did other county employess get a 21% raise?
