Re: “Why only half a candidate forum?” (online letter, 10-13).

As the current president of City Club of Tacoma, I had the chance to hear from the letter writer at our last board meeting. He was invited to share his objections with us even though he has not been a club member for some time. As we explained to him then, one of our values is to have ample time for meaningful dialogue with our speakers, including questions and answers from our audience.

At least 14 people in the greater Tacoma area are currently running for the Legislature, but we have only 40 to 45 minutes for our speakers at lunch programs. Thus we limited our forum to the 27th and 28th districts, where most of our members reside. We further limited the forum by choosing the races in these two districts that had the narrower margins after the August primary.

Each of the candidates running in these two races will be in the forum. We regret that we do not have the resources to host debates for all the candidates in all 14 races in our area. As always, everyone is welcome to attend the event by registering on our website at www.cityclubtacoma.org
