TRAINS: Don’t allow high-speed travel

The numerous recent deaths on Burlington Northern tracks in the South Sound must be addressed by the state Department of Transportation immediately.

It is no surprise that the vast majority of these deaths have been caused by Amtrak trains, which hurtle through our communities daily. Because they are lighter in weight and are allowed to travel through South Sound communities at high speeds they often seem to appear from nowhere.

Please know that when you hear these trains, it will be too late. Cross only at designated crossings, and stay away from the tracks.

It is always easy to place blame on those who have trespassed on the train tracks, but the DOT and train operators bear some responsibility to help ensure the safety of the citizens living near the tracks. There are many communities through which these trains travel at much lower speeds. Why are the South Sound communities not offered the same consideration? Safe pedestrian travel should be afforded across their tracks.

It is obvious that Washington state has not provided its citizens with the safety precautions and education that is needed for safe, high-speed train travel through heavily populated urban areas. Now is the time to immediately suspend high-speed train travel through the South Sound area until the State has taken whatever steps necessary to reduce the number of fatalities.

Quite frankly, you’re an idiot. Number 1-
“It is always easy to place blame on those who have trespassed on the train tracks”
Of course it is… because it’s their damn fault! There have been multiple “don’t go near tracks” ad campaigns, there are warning signs, and common sense dictates that you’re supposed to stay away from the things. Should we blame bathtub makers for designing a tub that a person who falls asleep in may drown? It’s absurd.
Secondly, we don’t have “high speed” rail anywhere in the US, so your blather about that is utter nonsense. High Speed Rail is the Japan-based 186mph Shinkansen. High Speed Rail is the Europe-based Eurostar.
US Amtrak, at it’s fastest, goes barely at the upper range of what a passenger cartravels, about 70mph.
Next time do some damned research before you go spout off and embarass yourself, ok Beth? Stop wasting our time and the Trib’s print.

Beth.. you must be a 90 year old woman. Should we also lower our freeway speeds limits to 45??? Idiot.

Thank goodness I am not the only person that thinks this letter is ridiculous.

    What a moron.

  5. @Omega629 ……. When was the last time you were able to REACH 45MPH on our local freeways!! ;)
