The News Tribune editorial board’s endorsement for 27th District representative, Position 1 (editorial, 10-6) is puzzling.
It’s true this race has two good candidates who know the community and how government works. However, it is important to go beyond those simple attributes and analyze what each candidate brings to the job.
Jake Fey brings strong knowledge and background on two issues important for the future of this region where expertise is lacking – energy and transit. The Pierce County delegation is blessed with many members who have expertise in health care, education and human services.
Rep. Jeannie Darneille and I both have expertise and leadership roles on the human service issues which are important to the 27th District. But neither of us has expertise or serves on a committee dealing with energy or transportation.
The elected representatives of the 27th District have always worked together to share knowledge and focus on the issues important to our district and the county as a whole. Fey will play a key role in that teamwork. He has proven his leadership on transit issues via his service on the Pierce Transit and Sound Transit boards. As the manager of Washington State University’s Extension energy program, his expertise on this important issue is unmatched in the Legislature.
Add to that your acknowledgment that he is thoughtful, smart and dedicated and your praise for his discerning eye and inclination to ask the critical questions, and I cannot understand why you would not endorse Fey. I endorse strongly him.
