ELECTION: How can Murray claim to fight for Boeing?

Letter by Larry Apple, Lakewood on Oct. 4, 2010 at 2:05 pm with 57 Comments »

How is it that Sen. Patty Murray claims she’s fighting so hard for Boeing?

She voted for the health care bill, which will cost Boeing $150 million per year and will cause Boeing Employees’ health insurance premiums to go up.

She was powerless to do anything when Boeing moved Dreamliner production to South Carolina last year and moved its headquarters to Chicago in 2001. And under her watch, Boeing lost jobs.

That’s a pretty bad record for Murray to “brag” about.

Larry – can you document this statement or was it behindus retrievus?

As far as “moving to Chicago and South Carolina” – can you explain what part Patty Murray played? Did she drive the moving truck?

Since Murray doesn’t play a part in State politics, as far as tax policy and those moves were based on avoiding local taxes and attempting to break unions in a right to work state, I’d say that Murray didn’t do anything that they rest of us didn’t do – like sigh with disappointment.

Funny. Boeing remains one of Murray’s five largest campaign contributors.

  2. Publico says:

Larry, facts please. Not your empty, factless words.
Or, my favorite, “will somebody please jiggle the handle.”

  3. the3rdpigshouse says:

Murray & Cantwell are the reasons Boeing moved to Chicago!!! She has zero accomplishments for 18 years in the Senate!!

  4. Publico, congrats on having a comment make it to print in Sundays paper. Too bad it was for the wrong person. ;-)

I will not confirm or deny that I work for said company, but the 150 million number seems about what I remember reading. And some locations (eventually all of them) are going to have to start paying a percentage of the national average for health care. So yes, Obama care will cost Boeing workers a lot of money.

  5. Sumner401 says:

Another republican spewing fact less talking points?
    I’m shocked.

  6. Publico says:

OK, folks. Let’s have the source of the $150 million estimate or shut up. Simple as that, because anyone can make stuff up.

  7. OldLefty says:

My sources say that Boeing is moving back to Washington if Gregoire buys the executives lunch everyday and their health care insurance costs will drop by 150%.

If you’re going to make stuff up, it might as well be good.

  8. OldLefty says:

For those whose reading selections avoid reality….Patty Murray’s work for veterans since 2003:

2003-4: Helps keep VA’s American Lake, Vancouver and Walla Walla facilities open after they are targeted for closure.

2005: Exposes major VA funding shortfall; Congress passes an additional $1.5 billion.

2005: Introduces legislation to help more vets with multiple sclerosis get VA care.

2006-7: Helps win approval for new VA clinics in Washington state.

2007: Pushes record funding for VA.

2007: Helps introduce legislation to create comprehensive-care system for both active troops and veterans.

2007: Introduces legislation that would make 242,000 additional veterans eligible for care and rescind VA cutbacks announced in 2003.

  9. truthbusterguy says:

OK you non vets, I am a vet and use the VA hospitals. Talk to the working staff at the hospital and they will tell you that Patty is considered a joke. She talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk. Don’t buy the lie. She is blowing smoke and vets know it.

  10. It is amazing how you guys can accept it as fact when Obama said passing health care “reform” will save $300 billion, and was needed to “fix” the economy. You probably did that while jumping up and down shouting “Hope and Change” and clicking your heels.

But when someone says they have seen information and can’t share the source, you dismiss it because it goes against what you believe in (I thought you were all in favor of protecting the source).

    Whatever.

All I know is Obama care will set my salary back 5 years.

Carry on with your Republicans are the anti-christ and Democrats are angels talk.

  11. OldLefty says:

“All I know is Obama care will set my salary back 5 years.”

Oh, so THIS is what it’s all about?

Ken works in the insurance industry and since they are going to get their feet held to the fire, Ken won’t get his raise for the next five years? Is that what you’re saying Ken?????

Otherwise, you’re bluffing and we aren’t taking the bait.

    Here is the walk:

….until you can prove otherwise. I think we know who is blowing smoke.

  13. OldLefty says:

“In 1995, Murray became the first woman named to the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. She also serves on the Appropriations subcommittee for military construction and veterans affairs.

    Seattle Times –
“She’s received high marks from the Disabled American Veterans over the years, working to make it easier for veterans to get disability benefits, pushing for counseling clinics in Bellingham and Yakima, and helping get aid for homeless vets.

“She’s done good for health care, and a lot for local vets,” said Harry Brownell, an Air Force retiree and a regular at the Redmond lodge of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.”

    Walkin’ the walk.

You were protecting “Liberty Pundits” “quote” of the Associated Press?

  15. fatuous says:

I don’t know about the heath insurance premium going up. It’s possible due to the increase in benefits that the Obama health care package requires.

The 150 million number comes from the change in a corporation’s ability to deduct retire prescription coverage from their taxes.

Before corporations got free money from the government for retiree prescription coverage, and they where able to double dip by deducting from their taxes the cost for this coverage even though they didn’t pay for the coverage.

Now the get the free money from the government, but they are not allowed to double dip. This has to be reflected in their accounting, and that’s where the 150 million dollar number comes from.

    See http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304252704575155613728130190.html

  16. Oh, so THIS is what it’s all about?

Ken works in the insurance industry and since they are going to get their feet held to the fire, Ken won’t get his raise for the next five years? Is that what you’re saying Ken?????

Um no, Old Lefty. Take your meds and calm down. If you put your glasses on and re-read it, I said it would put me back 5 years, meaning the extra money I will have to spend on Obama care will negate the raises I have received for the last five years.

And I love how you can assume that I work for the insurance industry. You liberals think you have a magic wand and can infer anything. You know what happens when you assume…

I would think you would be the one concerned about Obama care. When they diagnose you with a disease that costs too much to treat VS your age, they will decide that the return on investment of Federal dollars is not worth it, then it is the hospice chute for you.

  17. OldLefty says:

ken – don’t let anyone ever convince you that you understand satire.

As to this – “When they diagnose you with a disease that costs too much to treat VS your age, they will decide that the return on investment of Federal dollars is not worth it, then it is the hospice chute for you.”

What do you think they did with my friend that died of cancer? He hit the max on his insurance policy and it was “go home and die, here’s some meds to keep the pain tolerable”

Sorry that this is going to impact you so terribly. I’d bet that my friend would have given up five years of raises to be alive today, but tough luck for him, right Ken?

  18. pen_mightier_than_sword says:

Ken, go work in a “right to work” state like South Carolina. There the Boeing workers will earn $9 per hour and will not be unionized. Rossi is openly contemptuous of unions and the “unconstitutional” minimum wage as he puts it.

Rossi doesn’t know what he hates more, gay marriage or unions. Rossi also despises the EPA, the EEOC, equal pay for equal work laws (requiring companies to pay men and women the same wages for the same job) and Rossi wants taxes slashed on the rich and austerity budget cuts that would force the layoff of millions of government workers.

  19. Simple, Rossi wants the tanker contract to go to Airbus, Murray will fight for it to go to Boeing and is well positioned to do so. Rossi hate unions so much he will spite his own state’s interests to follow some kind of Limbonian edict.
He will vote against the minimum wage, against unemployment insurance, against social security, against wall street reform, and against anything that attempts to raise the middle class worker’s standard of living. All just so the top 2% get yet another great big fat tax break the rest of us are supposed to pay for.

  20. klthompson says:

Seeing Murray cowtowing to Harry Reid is enough reason to get rid of her.

  21. karlveek says:

All I know is that in 2010 my health insurance went down by 15%. In 2009 in went up 32%, 2008 up 24%, 2007 up 29%, 2006 up12%. So it seems to me health insurance had be raising at a ridculas rate before the reforms kick in.

  22. malaglot says:

OldLefty try reading first before you start typing you might actually learn something. “Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced that it expects to recognize an income tax charge of approximately $150 million as a result of the recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as modified by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act. Beginning in 2013, Boeing will no longer be able to claim an income tax deduction related to prescription drug benefits provided to retirees and reimbursed under the Medicare Part D retiree drug subsidy. Although this tax increase does not take effect until 2013, accounting standards require that a deferred income tax asset be written down in the period legislation changing the tax law is enacted.

The charge is expected to reduce net earnings by approximately $150 million, or $0.20 per share, in the first quarter of 2010 as an increase to income tax expense and a reduction to the deferred income tax asset. Cash impacts of this charge will be realized over many years beginning in 2013.” http://boeing.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=1140
So Larry was right and you are wrong.

  23. OldLefty says:

    Malagot –

If you care to check, I mentioned “Liberty Pundits”, which quoted the same PR piece, via the AP from the Boeing PR room. Caterpillar, John Deer and a host of others complained about the same thing. Pardon me if I don’t cry for Boeing losing 20 cents a share against a prognositcated loss four years down the road.

Now, take a look at Fatuous’ post from the WSJ.

I try not to be redundantly redundant on the thread.

Bottom line, all I did was ask the letter writer if he could document the claim. As usual, the Right Wing misrepresents the facts of the issue (see WSJ)

  24. fatuous says:

malaglot, Larry only told half of the story. He failed to mention the double dip.

Both the left and the right have this bad habit of telling half of the story. It is up to us to look under the hood and flush out the whole truth.

  25. Sumner401 says:

When they diagnose you with a disease that costs too much to treat VS your age, they will decide that the return on investment of Federal dollars is not worth it, then it is the hospice chute for you.

For someone that pretends to know so much about “Obamacare” you sure have your facts wrong.
Buts not surprising is it considering where you get those ‘facts’.

What you describe is the current system, pre-“Obamabacare” as it were, you pay into insurance with their promise to pay your medical, right up until you get sick.
Then your ‘hospice chute’ kicks in only…..you’re not covered for that either.

The HRC reform outlaws that, understand what that means kenny?
Now, listen real close because this is very important,

There is no Government health care, I’ll repeat that, there is no Government health care.
    Period.
The big bad scary evil Govt. has nothing what so ever to say about your health care. That is between you and your doctor, you see kenny, the big bad scary evil muslim foreigner President removed the insurance company from the equation.
    He made it better.
Your rates will go down once the requirement that everyone get in the game kicks in, that how insurance works kenny, more people in, the less it costs each one of us.
    Understand?
Now turn off the GOP propaganda channel, you’ll feel a lot better.

  26. commoncents says:

Let’s see…the company historically has liked it’s employees to retire at age 55 and even pushes out execs who reach that age…in exchange they offer(ed) an early retirement package that included retiree medical to bridge the gap until those employees reach medicare age —quite generous I might add!!! However, I add the (ed) as it’s no longer on the table for new hires… Now, the government had subsidized a part of that expense BUT allows the company to deduct the full amount (even the portion that is subsidized). Due to accounting law changes (not Obamas) they are required to account for the income as soon as its known. Now as a result of the health care bill the deduction loophole is removed…and darn it if that pesky accounting requirement doesn’t force them take the charge as soon as it’s known as well. Blame Murray if you’d like but it’s a series of events that occurred more than anything else.

  27. OldLefty says:

“try bashing you with a tea party derogitory name”

Oh, you must be talking about the original name that the TEApublicans choose for themselves.

  28. BigSwingingRichard says:

Do any of you know that Obamacare, voted for by Patty Murray, in fact championed by Patty Murray has created a new tax?

A sales tax on the sale of your home, effective 1-1-2011, of 3.8%.

If you sell your home for a gain of $400,000, you will owe an Obamacare tax of $14,600. Thanks Patty. This should help improve the housing market during this recession.

I’ll assume that Patty’s education did not required her to take economics 101 for a degree in “Recreation” at WSU.

Dumb Patty does as she is told by Obama, Reid and Pelosi and we in Washington are paying the price for her dumb decisions.

  29. BigSwingingRichard says:

Also, did anyone else see the TV show “Upfront” with Robert Mak on KING TV? Mak investigated Patty’s claim she saved a hospital in Wenachee.

    Patty’s claim is bogus.

It is a 20 bed “hospital” down the road from an existing 200 bed hospital. The small hospital was started 8 years ago and is directly owned by a group of doctors so they can bill a higher rate to the medicare program. Congress put a stop to this over billing but Patty got these doctors “grandfathered in” under the old law so these docs get to continue to charge Medicare a higher rate than other doctors. We will all pay more for her “help”.

If fact, the docs involved are not even endorsing Patty.

They disagree with her for supporting Obamacare. Patty’s “I Saved a Hospital Commercial” is a distortion of the facts and (here’s another surprise) and her involvement will cost everyone more in future taxes because of higher healthcare charged to Medicare.

Thanks Patty, you hosed all of us again.

  30. OldLefty says:

    Old news, Richard.

Now my question to you is that 20 bed hospital serving people in need of health care? Is the other hospital turning away medicare patients? Why were these doctors successful in starting this hospital? What about “supply and demand”?

NIce of the doctors to turn their backs on Murray now that she got them what they wanted.

  31. OldLefty says:

Richard – I guess you missed this list of accomplishments for vets since 2003.

    My pleasure to post again:

  32. commoncents says:

Richard – that sales tax that you are talking about applies only to that amount that exceeds the 500k capital gains exemption that everyone enjoys. Since it’s on the amount that EXCEEDS the exemption if you sell your house for a gain of $600k (again that’s a GAIN) then you would owe the tax on the $100k for a grand total of $3,800. Is that an extra tax? You betcha….but it’s not what you claim it to be and not even close.

  33. Richard, stop with the half truths!!!

We have all have a $250,000 for singles and $500,000 capital gains exclusion on the sale of our homes.

Note it is a capital gain, which means you subtract your adjusted cost basis of your home, normally the purchase price, from the selling price of your home.

  34. Oh and another thing ol’ lefty, between 2004 up to present anything that has to do with the VA is from IAVA, which is a non partisan organization called Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, which I am proudly apart of. It is a veteran run organization that lobbies for veterans. Don’t believe me check it out http://www.IAVA.org. No politician would do anything for veterans until IAVA came around in early 2004 while I was in Iraq. So before you start spouting that Patty did this, Patty did that for veterans you might want to dig a little deeper bud and actually find out who introduces these topics to politicians.

  35. eagle_beak says:

an interesting letter Mr. Apple that has set off an also interesting debate.
to all who commented: i;ve enjoyed reading your comments.

God bless America and help us keep our country strong!

  36. Sumner401 says:

Do any of you know that Obamacare, voted for by Patty Murray, in fact championed by Patty Murray has created a new tax?

it didn’t of course but lets not let the truth cloud a good GOP talking li…point.

  37. OldLefty says:

    qwert:

I congratulate you on your community service for veterans.

Now I question your honesty about this statement –

“No politician would do anything for veterans until IAVA came around in early 2004 while I was in Iraq.”

Since I’ve witnessed the work done for veterans of WWII, Korean, and Vietnam, you’re going to have a tough time selling that truckload of manure.

  38. nwcolorist says:

Fatuous – the information you state in your post on 10/4, 7:50 pm about free money and double dipping is not found in the WSJ article you cite:
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304252704575155613728130190.html

Where did you get the additional information found in your last two paragraphs?

  39. OldLefty says:

“Paul Rieckhoff is the Executive Director and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and the author of Chasing Ghosts”

Ask Rieckhoff which political party does the most for veterans. He is a regular guest on MSNBC and a vocal supporter of the Democrats.

  40. OldLefty says:

It seems IAVA honors Senator Murray:

“That’s why I also attended a press conference this week, led by two lawmakers with a long history of supporting our troops: Senator Patty Murray (WA) and Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (SD). These legislators are leading sponsors of the Women Veterans Health Care Improvement Act, a bill to assess and improve the health care available to female veterans. This is a crucial piece of legislation, and IAVA was proud to be there in support of better care for my fellow veterans.

It was great to see the politicians focused on such a crucial issue. But you don’t need to be in Washington to honor the service of women in the military. Join IAVA’s celebration of Women’s History Month. You can take a quiz about women’s history in the military and learn more about some of our nation’s women warriors. IAVA is leading the charge for this generation of women warriors, not just during Women’s History Month, but every month of the year.

Paul Rieckhoff is Executive Director and Founder of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and the author of Chasing Ghosts.”

  41. OldLefty says:

Did I dig deep enough, qwert?

  42. nwcolorist says:

“Do any of you know that Obamacare, voted for by Patty Murray, in fact championed by Patty Murray has created a new tax?”

This is true according to: http://www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/realestate.asp

beerBoy brought it up the other day.

  43. nwcolorist says:

Good grief, OL, Patty Murray is a politician. She’ll find which way the wind is blowing and jump on the bandwagon going that way. Her words mean nothing.

  44. the3rdpigshouse says:

The dim-bulb Murray may have done a few things for the vets however, I have no confidence in an individual who believes the taliban built more hospitals & schools in Iraq than the USA!!! Maybe she should get a job at the VA where we can hold her in a position where she may be of some use – not in our nations Senate where the country is at stake!!!

  45. OldLefty says:

colorist – do you have some proof that Murray hasn’t been a champion for veteran’s causes? It seems you have baseless assertions while there is documented proof of Murray’s work.

Here is Murray’s voting record. Please tell us where the Washington Post is wrong:

    http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/m001111/

  46. OldLefty says:

“I have no confidence in an individual who believes the taliban built more hospitals & schools in Iraq than the USA!!! ”

I have no confidence in someone that bought into that silly story.

  47. the3rdpigshouse says:

Hey – ole Lefty – is it true or not that she made those rediculous statements?? Maybe you need to read some history Ole Lefty!!!

    Murray’s remarks

Last Wednesday, at the conclusion of a session with students at Columbia River High School in Vancouver, Wash., Murray said she wanted to bring up a further point to add to their discussion about alternatives to war.

“We’ve got to ask, why is this man so popular around the world?” she said in reference to bin Laden, the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “Why are people so supportive of him in many countries that are riddled with poverty?”

Murray said, according to the Vancouver Columbian newspaper, that bin Laden has been “out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven’t done that.”

The second-term senator then asked the students to ponder: “How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?”

  48. OldLefty says:

Uh……3rd pig……I don’t know how to tell you, but Bin Laden isn’t Taliban

“I have no confidence in an individual who believes the taliban built more hospitals & schools in Iraq than the USA!!!”

Now, that point aside, Murray made that comment in 2002 and it was accurate. She didn’t say that Bin Laden (not the Taliban) built more hospitals and schools in Iraq than the USA (read the quote you posted)

Anyone that mistakes Bin Laden for Taliban is probably not going to worry about the lack of accuracy on other statements, but don’t expect me to accept it.

  49. OldLefty says:

    reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeediculous!

  50. Sumner401 says:

Murry’s statements were true then and they remain true. It was more than proven back then and nothing has changed it.
That was another in a very long list of phony trumped up fox propaganda right wing outrage! items that have all been prove wrong.
But the lies are told so much and for long that the IQ challenged still believe them.

  51. Old Lefty…I applaud you for doing some research on IAVA. Unfortunatey you are as wrong as two boys kissing.

What you found was a little snippet from another news source covering DC, what you failed to do was add all the other Senators that are both D’s and R’s that sponsor or co-sponsor several bills that IAVA presented to congress. Once again you fail to tell the whole the truth and only “pick and choose” certain words to make it look like your statements are factual.

Once again I want to thank you, sumner, publico and anyone else who votes for incumbants for creating more debt for my generation. HR 1424, HR 1, and HR 3590 are just a few ridiculous bills that have done absolutely nothing except waste money and add governemtnjobs.

There are 635 members of Congress. The powers that be (Democrats) decided to take a break on September 30th. That has been the earilest congress has taken off in 50 years, they are not resuming until November 12th. That is six weeks off while the nation is still facing a 9.6% unemployment rate, they failed to vote on a new budget, Bush tax cuts, jobs bill, middle class tax cuts, NASA funding, off shore oil drilling, ethics violations, immigration, and lastly the GI Bill.

Now why are they here? Why aren’t they still working? How come they talk about problems we sent them to fix last election? WHy do they blame other members of congress for getting nothing done?

These are just a few of the problems I have Congress, and unfortunately for Patty, she works for us. And she fails to listen to us and it is time for her to go! 18 years, I know she has done some good for our state, but she is getting old and stale and we need fresh faces and fresh ideas.

Unfortunately for you ol’ lefty, your screen name says it…you are OLD! You already did your part and now it is time for you to retire to a home, get out of politics and let generation Y take control to get us out of the mess your generation got us in! VOTE OUT MURRAY!!

  52. commoncents says:

I can understand the desire to get fresh faces and fresh ideas…it has some validity. But the system benefits those with experience (chair positions go to those with longest service). That being said..Rossi is from the same generation as Murray. If you truly want fresh faces then he’s not a true change.

  53. Hmm…can you say HYPOCRITE! This was in todays paper read below…

Lobbyists have given Sen. Patty Murray more than $665,000 for her 2010 campaign, according to an analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics.

She has received more than anyone in Congress this election cycle except Majority Leader Harry Reid, according to the nonpartisan group.

    Candidate Race Total
    Harry Reid (D-Nev.) NVS2 $998,054
    Patty Murray (D-Wash.) WAS2 $665,950
    Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) ARS2 $494,701
    Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) ALS2 $467,991
    Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) NYS2 $363,938
    Richard Burr (R-N.C.) NCS2 $352,693
    Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) IAS1 $348,150

Most of that money has apparently come in recent months. It has more than doubled since the center’s similar analysis in July.

The center also has analyzed campaign reports to determine the top industries giving to each campaign. Lobbyists now are second to “lawyers and law firms” as the main industry backing Murray.

Republican challenger Dino Rossi’s top contributors, after those listing “retired,” are from the securities and investment industry, which has given him $103,000. Murray, who has taken $194,000 from the same industry, has been attacking Rossi for taking Wall Street money and opposing Democrats’ financial reform bill.

  54. Once again facts trump talking points.

    1. “She was powerless . . .” The U.S. Senate, neither individually or collectively, has any authority to tell Boeing (or anyone else) where to build planes or where to put its corporate headquarters.

    2. “..health care bill, which will cost Boeing $150 million per year” Bet the CEO and other top executives will cry all the way to the bank to deposit their bonuses.

    3. “ . . . heath care bill will . . . cause Boeing Employees’ health insurance premiums to go up.” As if the insurance companies need an excuse to raise rates.”

    4. “. . . under her watch, Boeing lost jobs.” Most of the jobs were lost while the Republicans controlled both Houses of Congress and the White House.

  55. Hey Qwert,

Some things that you say you care about: Jobs bill, GI Bill, and Middle class tax cuts, well None of that will happen if we don’t Vote to Keep Patty Murray in office!

Remember if you want keep moving forward you have to put the car in D (Democrat) Not R (Republ-can’t)

  56. Afret…if you are going to try and have a discussion with me post something with some thought! I don’t want to read some regurgitated cr*p that you saw Obamer say at a pep rally in some ghetto in Chicago. Come on now dude, get original, I know it’s tough to do, all libs that post things on here say the same thing….can you think outside the box?

Can you think for yourself or do you need the government to come in and appoint a “Comment Czar”or would you like the government to appoint individuals to create committee so they can do some pointless research while wasting our tax dollars on ideas that will not work.

The decision is up to you…

  57. Hey Qwert,

Wow you sure just demonstrated a lot of thought – Not. Sounds to me like your the one regurgitating republican’t propaganda. You need to turn off Mr. Beck for a while and think for yourself.

    Also never been to Chicago.
