TACOMA: Last merchant, please turn out the lights

Letter by Glenn Sukys, Tacoma on Sep. 24, 2010 at 2:19 pm with 49 Comments »

Tacoma is beginning to resemble Detroit. Parking fees and time limits will doom downtown merchants.

Anyone going to the County-City Building should expect a $15 ticket. Heck, it takes a half hour just to get through security and court procedures take hours.

Now utilities will increase (TNT, 9-24). There are many vacant houses for sale with no prospective buyers and only minimum wages jobs available.

Will the last people who still have electricity turn out the lights when they leave?

  1. Roncella says:

Both the Mayor and the City Council should be fired.

They are un qualified to hold public office. They are doing everything wrong in raising rates and parking fees now utilities are going up.

Are they out of their minds, don’t they realize we are in a serious recession bordering on a depression ??

The democrats control Olympia and just go on spending and taxing everything they can. Now Gregoire and the other Democrats want to vote in a State Incometax to futher hurt the wage earners and the economy of the state.

We all need to get registered and ready to vote as many of the Democrats and bigh spenders out this November. Vote No on a state Income tax.

Vote for Rossi, vote Murray into retirement.

All the independents and Tea Party folks and Republicans need to get ready to send the bums packing in November.

  2. eagle_beak says:

Mr. Sukys, it is sad that all you have said is so true.

God bless America and help us make our country great!

  3. roncell said it very well without mincing any words.I hope the Ostriches will pull their heads out of the sand long enough to realize what the people in office now, have been doing to the voters.

  4. OldLefty says:

Actually, roncell bleeted the rhetoric of the TEApublicans who know about a half dozen phrases inclusive of “keep the government out of my medicare”

You have to love the humor of “vote them out (if they are Democrats) as if every issue is the fault of one party.

Parking revenue is no new issue. When the News Tribune was downtown all employees had to fend for themselves on the street, plugging meters to have a place to park when they worked. In those days, a parking ticket was $3. My salary was $125.00

Come to the party (pardon the pun) TEAsters. The cost of doing business increased along with the incomes of Americans and in many cases more than the incomes of Americans.

Now, try to blame Democrats for the outsourcing of jobs to lower and control wages along with the demise of labor unions protecting jobs and incomes.

  5. truthbusterguy says:

It’s a lot more than just parking. To fund the socialist programs they also use traffic camera, added fees, refuse to lower our property tax, tax our water and candy and now they want a income tax. All of this plus Obama care is going to drive business to close.

I for one have been boycotting Tacoma since they came out to support the boycott of AZ for their immigration bill.

This is a great state and I love living here but I look forward to the day that the liberal policies cause a melt down and we begin to swing back to a lot smaller government.

  6. Sumner401 says:

I have to wonder if there is any thing the teawhiners don’t call ‘socialist’?
Is that their ‘go too’ scare word when they clearly have nothing to stand on?

  7. the3rdpigshouse says:

Enjoy the fruits from the socialist democrats all you leftists continue to elect & reelect in the Socialist State of Washington!!!

  8. pen_mightier_than_sword says:

God, I can only imagine what Tacoma would be like if all the elected officials were “fired” and a bunch of Glen Beck’s with GED’s and all took their place. Holy Crap!

  9. DAKOTANATIVE says:

I would really like to meet one of those home owners that are serious about selling. As for businesses, if they cared, they would put an end to it.

  10. OldLefty says:

I’m amused at the comment of boycotting Tacoma for not supporting Arizona’s silliness about immigration.

First of all, the claims to support Arizona’s Governor and the Legislature have all been debunked. It now comes down to this sort of thinking….

I quote Steven Colbert, today in Congress: “My family didn’t travel 4,000 miles across an ocean to have their jobs taken by a bunch of immigrants.”

  11. I see the something for nothing crowd has already spoken. I thought “Libertarians” were all about making people who make use of government services (like streets with parking available) pay directly for those services….

Tacomans crack me up – always complaining about parking – go live in a big city for awhile and you might realize how easy parking is in Tacoma.

  12. fatbellieddragon says:

When did Star Fleet come to town?

  13. nwcolorist says:

On the parking meter issue, the proofs in the pudding. Let’s wait and see if business volume increases or decreases.

  14. nwcolorist says:

Local government here is essentially a make-work program for liberals. The citizens are somewhere on the priority list, but who knows where.

For instance, by raising the cost of parking, the City Council is making it harder to take your car downtown. At the same time Pierce Transit is raising the prices on bus fares.

Just one more reason not to go downtown.

  15. Sumner401 says:

The citizens are somewhere on the priority list, but who knows where.

We know where they are with the GOP/teawhiners…..at the very bottom and always have been.

  16. Glenn wrote, “Tacoma is beginning to resemble Detroit. Parking fees and time limits will doom downtown merchants.”

Detroit’s issues have nothing to do with parking. The merchants in Tacoma are frustrated because there is no parking available for their customers. I have driven around the block in Tacoma searching for a reasonably close parking space, and would have gladly payed 75 cents, or $1.50 for one, instead of having to park several blocks away.

Those who are here, crying over paying for parking fees, weren’t going to do much shopping downtown, anyway.

Secondly, what makes this socialist in nature? The merchants (small businesses) are the ones behind this parking fee. Or is it a case of, “I don’t like it. It must be socialism.”

  17. Novelist3 says:

Why the heck are people like Sumner turning this into a left/right issue? This has nothing to do with GOP or Democrats, this is about a badly timed, public-harming business-harming decision made by a city council.
Anywho, Roncella- nwcolorist, you guys made some great comments. As usual, actually. I can always count on relevant, thought-provoking comments from both of you, elevated above the typical sigh-inducing post crowd.

  18. ratujack says:

The parking meter’s……..Brain dead idea, unless you want to increase the City Managers salary to match the Right Honorable City Manager of Bell, California…….$870,000 big ones….annually. Plus several others….the Police Chief. The Council. Eric Anderson..the City manager job is open. Go for it.
Of course I will boycott downtown Tacoma……. beerboy and sumner……..the group in Bell, Cal. were all DEMOCRATS. Not a Republican or a beer boy Liberttarian amongst them. sumner I will buy your one way bus ticket to Bell, Cal. to live amonst all those Democrats. Take the Mayor of Tacoma with ya! Well this was fun……….now off to Chambers Bay to golf.

  19. “Now utilities will increase (TNT, 9-24). There are many vacant houses for sale with no prospective buyers and only minimum wages jobs available.”

Well when you send your jobs overseas what do you expect.

Both the Democrats and Republicans have been selling out the American worker with their free but unequal trade BS.

  20. TIDEWATCHERS says:

I got a big laugh when all the big wig local politicians jumped on their high horse and started yelling “boycot Arizona” in an attempt to secure the local
immigrant vote. They all agreed not to do any business with companies in
Arizona except one….. The company that makes the red light cameras!!!!
I guess producing a product that takes $10’s of thousands of dollars out of the working tax payers pockets and puts it into your coffers every month exempts you from being a “bad company”. What a joke……

  21. So parking meters are a conspiracy of Bell, CA politicos??!!!???

    ROTFLMAO

  22. Sumner401 says:

I always know I’m correct when the far right extremist attack, repeatedly.
And watch out for the evil socialist parking meters!
Ever vigilant against the evils of socialism, no matter how many times you redefine it to fit your long dead agenda.

  23. ratujack says:

sumner……..as Margaret Thatcher once said “socialism is fine until you run out of other peoples money”.
The phrase ” Politicaly Correct ” was used in the early part of the century by the Communist Party in Russia to describe those that stayed loyal to the Party and were also called ” apparatchiks “. They were the elite with all the money and material things. It paid off to be ” politically correct ” by remaning faithfull to the communist union bosses. It is called a “sycophantic ‘ ( attitude towards) . As long as you remained faithfull and “politically correct ” you got everything. Sound familiar like democrats in office. ooops just sliced one ……….

  24. ratujack – Maggie Thatcher?!!!??? Well at least she had bigger cajones that Ronnie-take-a-nap but please.

And your story about the phrase “politically correct” having communist and union origins……citations?

  25. ummmm…….wasn’t downtown a scary red light district not too long ago but, through the efforts of the City, people actually started coming there?

  26. ratujack says:

Thank you beer boy for helping prove my point about PC…..goodboy.

  27. villager98 says:

I have business in downtown Tacoma 3 to 5 times a week and have been pleased to find available parking with easy access to the places I need to go since the pay-to-park system was installed. It will prove to be a good idea, or not, in time but so far I’m liking it.

  28. Kevindot1 says:

Wow Glenn Sukys, you and ratujack sure are out of touch with reality. You both are using a little too much kite string I think.

  29. Sumner401 says:

Every city in the nation has pay to park, it’s not the end of the world and they sky really isn’t going to fall.

  30. This isn’t about Democrats, liberals, Republicans, or conservatives, Roncella, sincere, and truthbusterguy. This isn’t even about the T Party.

This is about small business, the merchants in downtown Tacoma, who would like to see some available parking in front of their businesses for their customers.

75 cents is a small price to pay to be able to find a convenient parking space, when you need it.

  31. Novelist3 says:

“wasn’t downtown a scary red light district not too long ago but, through the efforts of the City, people actually started coming there?” No.

  32. tacomaruss says:

City of Destiny? What or Where is the destiny? Life long resident here. I havent worked in the city for more the 15 years. Theres no longer family wage jobs avaiable and theres no reason to expect jobs to come back any time soon.
Depression is acummlative effect of stress’s. Tacoma must have a case of terminal depression. Detroit …tacoma sister city.

  33. Sumner401 says:

tacomaruss, no family wage jobs in Tacoma, you are correct and Tacoma and pierce county are………conservative.
    Coincidence? I don’t think so.

  34. summit98446 says:

If City or County Council meetings begin at 5pm, the meters may discourage citizen participation, or even worse, represent a poll tax, of sorts. Probably not good for busines downtown either.

  35. I have been paying $1 an hour for years to park near the downtown library. Dropping the cost to 75 cents an hour is a small bargain.

  36. eagle_beak says:

still some of us love to knock anyone else’s opinion and call it teaparty or republican rhetoric. it does seem that many many of the comments that are so mean and so confrontational do come from liberals but any one of us can use illogic to call someone else names..
we need all of us. each and every one of us that care enough about our country to even comment on this or any other venue, to remember that in the end we are all …..Americans.

God bless America and help us make our country great! for the people are already great and trying each in their own way to make this an even better place to live.

  37. Sumner401 says:

it does seem that many many of the comments that are so mean and so confrontational do come from liberals

You need to keep reading. Most if not all “mean and confrontational’ comments are from the far right.

  38. the3rdpigshouse says:

Let me make an accurate which will be interpreted as a mean statement. Socialist democrats are generally the most unproductive members of our society and many of them are on the public dole in one form or another!!

  39. whitman411 says:

Who said poll tax? A poll tax is a tax to vote, not to voice your opinion or attend a meeting. Get real. Involvement costs.

I, personally, have not purchased one slim dime of goods or services from any Tacoma business since they voted to stop Arizona from protecting their own borders. I even chose a new dentist outside of the City limits. That shifting of spending amount to nearly $30,000 per year and the taxes and economic “power of multiplication” that goes with it.

  40. OldLefty says:

    “ratujack says:

Well this was fun……….now off to Chambers Bay to golf.

I’m sure glad that ratujack doesn’t participate in socialist programs like a golf course that provides special rates to Pierce County residents only.

Can you imagine what the price would be if it were a private course?

  41. OldLefty says:

I, personally, have not purchased one slim dime of goods or services from any Tacoma business since they voted to stop Arizona from protecting their own borders. ”

Well, there is another misrepresentation. The Obama Administration is responsible for more deportations than those before him. As to “protecting” their border…..from WHAT???? All of the scare stories – murder, beheadings, etc. have all been debunked.

If you want to leave the state to spend your money….or the country, for that matter…..it’s your gasoline bill. Enjoy!

Let me make an accurate which will be interpreted as a mean statement. Socialist democrats are generally the most unproductive members of our society and many of them are on the public dole in one form or another!! ”

Let me make an accurate statement. “Conservative” states notoriously take more federal money (dole, as you prefer) than “Liberal” states. Here’s the top 10:

    1. D.C. ($6.17) (since DC is run by our tax money, it should not be on the list)
    2. North Dakota ($2.03)
    3. New Mexico ($1.89)
    4. Mississippi ($1.84)
    5. Alaska ($1.82)
    6. West Virginia ($1.74)
    7. Montana ($1.64)
    8. Alabama ($1.61)
    9. South Dakota ($1.59)
    10. Arkansas ($1.53)

  43. OldLefty says:

“God bless America and help us make our country great! ”

You know, I keep seeing this phrase posted over and over thus I’m inclined to observe that either “God” doesn’t take orders from those telling him who or what to bless or those asking, don’t know a blessing when they see one.

I’m not the authority on what or who “God” might be, but I feel blessed every day I’m alive, regardless of what political party might be in charge.

I also observe that the “God Bless” demand comes from the same people that seem to think they have the market cornered on patriotism.

  44. I’ll continue to drive my big gas guzzler to shop anywhere but cities like tacoma.
I don’t and won’t pay to park…anywhere. That just “makes my thumbs hurt”.
How about bulldozing parts of that dump and painting some fricken stripes on
ground if you want to attract customers. Not enough revenue from tickets in that huh?

  45. Remarkable thread drift from parking meters here….

  46. ratujack says:

Old Lefty…..when you were born your dad said …a blessing from God.

  47. Hoodsportwriter says:

Are you kidding? How long have you been in Tacoma? Compared to 30 years ago the downtown is a thousand times better. Not finished but better.
This is the way Tacoma does things. Look at the Elks Club. 45 years of nothing but dead end ideas and nothing from the city. But we didn’t (as Seattle would have done) tear it down. Now it will be better than before.

Why blame the city council and the mayor? They have no power and it is the voters who have left us with this lousy form of city government. How many show up at the city elections. Not many and those that do have their own agenda. “Tea-whinners” what a perfect expression! And so true!

  48. Novelist – see Hoodsportswriter’s post above…….guess your “no” was uniformed.

  49. insidevoice says:

This is likely the most pro-business City Council Tacoma has had in 4 decades.

    On the topic of meters:
From what I read the businesses overwhelming wanted them. They were tired of employees who had free parking spots in the garages parking on the streets all day.

I was told the over 15,000 people used the meters in the first week and nearly 20,000 the second week. I think downtown will grow despite the voices here that say $.25 or $1.00 will keep them from either

    a) spending $50.00 – $100.00 eating dinner
    b) getting something from a store you can’t get anywhere else
    c) going to their $200 curl and dye

Simply the blanket 30 min and 1 hour max times, combined with hundres of employees and students cramming the streets it was killing the retail.
