SALARIES: Pierce County has nothing to hide

It’s disappointing that some readers (letter, 9-24, and comments posted online) are interpreting executive editor Karen Peterson’s column (9-19) as a beef with local governments.

My understanding of her situation is that she’s frustrated that the state won’t provide a mass amount of data from 81 public agencies. She dispatched a reporter on Monday – the day after her column was published – to ask Pierce County for a copy of its report to the state. I had those records ready for The News Tribune to pick up on Tuesday because, fortunately, it was a fairly simple request that involved a relative handful of records.

The fact is, Pierce County and other local governments are very responsive to requests about public salaries. Just look at The News Tribune’s SoundInfo page on its website. You can look up the salaries of tens of thousands of public employees. Where do you think the TNT got that data from?

(George is Pierce County’s communications director.)

I also was curious about the assertions made by Karen Peterson because I had accessed payroll information through links picked up from The News Tribune. What is the real story?

In these very difficult financial times do we really need to pay a communications director $100,000 a year? Why can’t the various public agencies in Pierce County communicate for themselves?
