WAR: Obama’s right to shift our focus

Charles Krauthammer, he of the neo-con club which pushed to get us into the ill-conceived war in Iraq, is at it again (column, 9-3).

He still engages in this willful thinking that only if we spread our power around the trouble spots of the world and worked to bring democracy to those areas, all would be well. This after a seven-year war in Iraq and an even longer one in Afghanistan where our $700 billion – annual - defense spending and our whiz-bang technology does not show clear success.

I welcome President Obama’s desire to focus on our economy and on rebuilding our nation. How can we stay strong if we are slowly bleeding our resources through these ill-conceived wars?

“Those whom God wants to punish, he will send into Afghanistan” is an old East Asian proverb. After the British in 1845, the Germans in 1915 and the Russians in the 1980s were driven out without success, our efforts look like they will follow the same path.

Better to focus on “nation building” here at home and make us strong from within so that we can have clout when real threats come our way.
