CONGRESS: Adam Smith is no moderate

Letter by Paul R. Stone, Federal Way on Aug. 23, 2010 at 2:10 pm with 17 Comments »
August 23, 2010 3:23 pm

I remember watching Jimmy Carter on 60 Minutes when President Carter was running for reelection. Carter stated that he intended to run on his record. The interviewer retorted; “Trouble is, everybody else is also running on your record.”

Adam Smith is running away from his record. He calls himself an Independent in his TV ads. I guess he doesn’t want us to know he is a Democrat. He claims to be a moderate, but the American Conservative Union gave him a rating of zero, and he received an almost perfect 95 percent rating from the very liberal Americans for Democratic Action. That’s moderate? His voting record for the last two years is actually more liberal than Seattle’s Jim McDermott.

Adam Smith does play (and I mean play) the part well. He struggles with every vote, even sweating bullets as he agonizes over every bill. This is only for public consumption. He has never cast a conservative vote when it mattered. Oh, he will vote conservative if a liberal measure will pass without his vote. He will also vote conservative if the conservatives will win anyway. He is playing us for fools.

We are not going to be fooled this time.

  1. Remember 6 months ago when Smith was playing to the cameras holding out for fame as he supposedly sat on the fence on Obamacare. Then like the lapdog he is, he voted for the destructeive unaffordable Health Plan.

He now hopes that the voters attention spans and memories dont extend 6 months back.

He deserves to join the ranks of the unemployed that he helped create by throttling businesses across the country.

  2. Adam Smith, a true patriot and a great legislator.
What part of progress do you not understand in the word progressive?

  3. Roncella says:

Adam Smith is a Liberal Democrat who tries to look Conservative especially at election time.

Its time to vote the big spend and tax Democrats out of Office, this November.

Get registered and get your friends and family motivated and enlightened about who would best represent their wishes and stop all the wasteful spending of Obama, Reid, :P elosi and Vote.

  4. madmike272 says:

The people that call Smith “Moderate”, are the ones that proudly wear their “Che” T-shirts.

I have been studying the history of the progressive movement, so I flatter myself that I understand it very well, probably better than you would like. What would you say that you are “progressing” toward, total government control of our lives? In other words, when will we have “progressed” enough to satisfy progressives? Freedom and opportunity or a dubious security, with our decisions made for us: that is the choice…

Thank you! I hope more people open their eyes and see the lack of action behind Adam’s words. I have heard every point you’ve made time and time again, and yet there are still people who think he represents us. I honestly don’t think he cares or honestly knows what his constituents want… even after his office was FLOODED with calls, emails and letters urging him to vote “no” on obamacare, he still voted yes and his reasoning for not listening to us? He says he voted for those who DIDN’T contact him! Obviously he thinks he knows what’s better for our district than all of us who made the effort to tell him what we want.

We need someone who’s actions go along with his words, who has integrity and isn’t afraid to tell us the truth, who carries the constitution in his back pocket (literally) and has our best interest in mind. We need someone who’s not going to try and decieve us by calling himself “independent” when we all know he’s democrat. That’s why I, and everyone I know, are voting for Dick Muri in November. At least he’ll answer the phone (his personal number is on his website and yard signs), honestly listen, respond to letters, and work with all of us to get us back on track.

  7. In our circle, we affectionately refer to Smith as “Adam Pelosi Smith” Want to know why? Look at his voting record. I was there when he told an audience at a townhall meeting that he would/could not support Obamacare. Oh really? And what about Progressive, to me the meaning describes a disease that becomes more widespread or severe over time. That is exactly what Obamacare will do if not repealed. Now the voters are telling Smith he let us down big time. Listen to his constituents? Uh,….. I don’t think so.

  8. the3rdpigshouse says:

Adam Smith has been nothing but a lap-dog for the current anti-American marxist/socialist residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave!! Wake up people and vote this liberal tax & spend idiot out of office!

  9. If you “really” want to know who Smith, Pelosi, & Reid represent, just follow the money trail. Once you see who their financial contributors are, you’ll have the answer. I checked out http://www.opensecrets.org and found that Adam Smith received 55% of his campaign money from Political Action Committees (PAC). And it would appear that a good portion of the rest came from unions, small business owners and corporations. And guess what they’re lobbing for, PORK and Free Pensions!
Dick Muri on the other hand received 96% of his financing from individuals like me. I saw only 2 corporate donors in the amount of $3,000 Total. That less than 4%. I’m sure you can do the math and connect the dots…

  10. Adam Smith has and will always be his own man. He is not a ‘Left Winger’, a wild Progressive or any other lable you want to try and stick him with. I trust him to look at what ever comes before him with a considered eye and an ear to his constituants. Just because he didn’t vote the way ‘You’ wanted him to, dosen’t make him a ‘Che’ tee shirt wearing liberal.

  11. JerrySte says:

Adam Smith comes down on the wrong (read left) side of every issue. Every time I write to him I get a form letter stating his liberal view on the subject. I will say that he actually had the guts to HAVE town hall meetings, unlike his senatorial colleagues. Problem is, he lied to us all when he told us he would not vote for the healthcare bill. A moderate? A loud resounding NO! A moderately good actor, maybe. I vowed to help anyone running against him if he did vote for that abortion of a bill and got a form letter back about abortion. Clearly, nobody even reads the mail. How can you know what your constituency wants if you don’t even read the mail? He needs to be replaced by a candidate who truly listens to his constituency and votes on the side of issues that are best for the country and his state and not merely obey the leadership of his party.

Hey, I hear there’s some ocean front property in Arizona you could buy for cheap too! Seriously, you TRUST this man to “look at what ever comes before him with a considered eye and an ear to his constituants”? Has he ever listened to you, or have you ever even tried to voice your opinion?

Perhaps you’re right about him being ” his own man”… because his voting record sure as heck doesn’t represent the 9th district. It’s his JOB to represent us, he’s not voted in to be his own man, he’s voted in to make our voice heard and to do what’s best for the district. He hasn’t had those things in mind for a very long time, and because of that, he needs to go now.

  13. So call me a fool if you like, but Adam Smith will have my vote and those of my friends and neighbors as well.

Looking at the issues that really matter, the issues that transcend political party and ideology Adam stands squarely on the side of the people – no matter what party they vote for.

He has been a powerful voice for our service men and women in action and those returning home from duty with a myriad of health issues to deal with. He has stood with families hit hard by this recession who have needed the support of increased access to food security and unemployment benefits to get them through this devastating time when too many of us are losing our jobs.

In my dealings with Congressman Smith I have found him to be an incredibly thoughtful, intelligent and passionate advocate for the people of the 9th district and beyond. I for one want to move forward with the clear vision of a proven leader.

  14. I have to agree with Mom 2 Mom: I don’t always agree with Adam Smith on the positions he takes. However, he quite clearly has an excellent reputation. He is very smart, works hard, and does his homework. He is a good family man. He has personal experience with difficulties in his own life, with his father dying before Rep. Smith turned 20. I have heard him speak at Town Hall meetings, and my experience is that Adam Smith speaks the truth. He tells you what he feels, regardless of whether he thinks it is what you want to hear. I can’t think of anyone who would do a better job representing the 9th District.

  15. Beckisagenius says:

Adam Smith will win again. He has more donations because he is more popular. He represents the majority of his district but not everyone. Washington has conservative districts. District nine is not even close to conservative so if you want someone like you in charge, I suggest you move. If you want change, stop whining and start knocking on doors to change people’s minds. If you come to my door I will listen as long as you have facts.

  16. exexpat93 says:

When you tow the Pelosi / Obama line for so long… how long do you have to tow it to be a liberal? So, Obama has increased war spending, been for exporting US jobs, kept Gitmo open, supports the Patriot Act, on and on… Does that make Obama a conservative? Nope! Adam Smith is a liberal to the core and fiber of his being. He ignores Veterans and Military members that ask him questions yet now claims he is “Pro Veteran”. Funny, a few years ago his staff would rather spit in a Vets face than do anything for them. If you were a Military member – just, please don’t contact our office. He is nothing but a rat trying to protect his seat at the table while sending the rest of us to the poor house. An out of touch pig at the trough. Adam Smith needs to go! Vote Dick Muri!
