I would to congratulate our soldiers on the success of the Bush/Cheney surge in Iraq and their victory in the U.S./Iraq war. As the last American combat brigade leaves Iraq, it is now a war for the Iraqis to fight, with the remaining American troops to be in a non-combat role.
I call on Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Adam Smith to join me in acknowledging the success of the surge and the apparent American victory. If they will not do this, I have to ask: If this was not a victory, why are our combat troops leaving Iraq? Is the U.S. surrendering? Is the U.S. abandoning our ally with the job not done? If this is how our elected leaders feel, then they should say so.
As we mourn the 4,400 troops who gave their lives, we need to recognize the great achievements that were made by them and our other troops who served in Iraq. Thank you.
