ELECTION: Make your vote count

Letter by Joseph M. Ebbs, Steilacoom on Aug. 13, 2010 at 5:00 pm with 58 Comments »
August 13, 2010 5:00 pm

This year’s elections are crucial. We have the opportunity to stop the rapid movement towards socialism, save our economy and our constitutional rights. We must replace members of Congress who voted blindly to follow the programs proposed by the radical Obama-Pelosi partnership.

This includes the need to replace incumbents like our 9th District representative, Adam Smith, who lists himself as a moderate but is not at all moderate in his voting record. A stimulus package, dependent on borrowed money of nearly a trillion dollars, was rushed through to keep unemployment at no more than 8 percent and avoid financial collapse. With that stimulus plan unemployment is nearing 10 percent, and small business is yet to get the help it needs.

Hundreds of banks, mortgage houses and two major automobile companies came under government control. Almost a quarter of the stimulus money remains unspent and yet a new bill was just signed for another $26 billion by President Obama. Because businesses are uncertain over future taxes and fees, the unemployment situation remains stagnant.

With the unread health care plan, which was also rushed through, Pelosi said we had to pass the bill in order to find out what was in it. After passing it, we still have not fully realized the effect it will bring to our wallets and health care system.

We may not be able to repeal the bad bills enacted but we must vote to stop the spread of big government, curb our reckless spending and deter the slide towards socialism.

  1. Sumner401 says:

Joe, your first paragraph could have been cut and pasted from, drudge, fox noise, glen beck, limbaugh or any of the other mindless media talking heads you folks worship.
If you want to be taken seriously, you have to stop with the nonsense, the socialism thing, just makes you look like a total fool.

  2. comment_tayter says:

If I wanted to listen to right wing propaganda radio blab, I would have turned the radio on….

Does the News Tribune believe that those of us who choose to avoid the half-truths and distortions of that medium need to read it repeated on their pages?

Or do they think it’s productive to demonstrate the continual Chicken Little cry of ‘Socialism! Socialism!’ by the brainwashed?

  3. Mr Ebbs, if you had a shred of factual evidence to back up anything in your letter, I might pay atention. I am constantly looking to see what actually caused our problems and what solutions might work. Your statement about banks, auto companies, etc being “under the control, just showed how brainwashed you are. Government loans were provided, if that is what you mean by “control” and have been paid back with interest. The auto companies posted their largest profits in decades. If Obama’s policies were actually allowed to be voted on by the filibustering Republicans, we might have more success stories like that. Unfortunately the Republicans are only out to feather their own pockets with corporate and special interest money and not out to allow our country to have economic success stories.

  4. iamjimbo says:

Thank you Joe for providing the fact(s) that Adam Smith lists himself as a moderate …
    but isn’t moderate,
that our economy is in jeopardy,
that PLOsi is an obama rubberstamp that couldn’t “drain the swamp” even if she knew what that meant to the American voter,
that hundreds of banks, mortgage houses and two major automobile companies came under government control… under obama,
that the healthcare take-over was no more read than the Arizona immigration bill… (gotta pass it to know what’s in it… yo)
… that businesses are uncertain over future taxes and fees, the unemployment situation remains stagnant…

Yet… not one refutation from the pee gallery… Kooky?

  5. madmike272 says:

Mr. Ebbs – apparently you have forgotten where you live. Right in the middle of a socialist state, and just south of San Francisci “Light” with lattes. The only thing that will change the demographics here is a good earthquake.

  6. When did Steilacoom get into the 9th District?

  7. Sumner401 says:

hundreds of banks, mortgage houses and two major automobile companies came under government control

    No they didn’t.

  8. Pray4Peace says:

The only thing missing from this letter and its comments is ‘frosty ‘ running around in circles ranting and raving “The Commies! It’s the Commies! Where’s Joe McCarthy when we really need him?!!”

  9. Of course I’m inclined to agree with iam and Mr. Ebbs.

The important thing is that people get out and vote and make your wishes known to those who are supposed to represent us.

  10. As you decide how you will vote, be mindful of which candidates are getting the support of President Obama. It could be the kiss of death for them.

From Neil Gardiner of the UK telegraph:

“The last few weeks have been a nightmare for President Obama, in a summer of discontent in the United States which has deeply unsettled the ruling liberal elites, so much so that even the Left has begun to turn against the White House. While the anti-establishment Tea Party movement has gained significant ground and is now a rising and powerful political force to be reckoned with, many of the president’s own supporters as well as independents are rapidly losing faith in Barack Obama, with open warfare breaking out between the White House and the left-wing of the Democratic Party. While conservatism in America grows stronger by the day, the forces of liberalism are growing increasingly weaker and divided.”

  11. nwcolorist says:

Judging by the responses, Mr. Ebb’s letter must have tweaked some noses out there.

  12. tomwa007 says:

Mr Ebbs’s is a pawn in the right wing dumbing down of America. Then again, living in Steilacoom maybe he is in the upper 2% income bracket and is helped by scare tactics to put people in power who are looking out for his ilk.

  13. Roncella says:

Joseph, Your advice and comments are truthful and correct.

This is what so many of the Liberal/Far Left Dems do at election time. They sound and speak like Conservatives. Its almost hard to believe that they are the same folks who voted for all of Obama’s Bankrupt Spending Bills including his Bankrupt Obama Care.

They voted for every lane brain bill Pelosi and Reid wanted against the wishes of many of their voters. Now they are trying to separate themselves from Obama & Reid & Pelosi as fast as they can.

Voters beware, its time to send them packing, they have not represented the best interests of the voters they are suppose to represent.

  14. It is sad that wingnuts cannot make cogent arguments and only appear to succeed when they take comments out of context. Mr. Ebbs’ letter is no different from the dozens and dozens of letters that repeat the same falsehoods over and over again. I know they hope to make them believable through repetition, but it will never happen.
President Obama’s administration has done much to strengthen our southern border in just two years as evidenced by the reduced number of illegal crossings. Just this week he signed legislation for an additional $600 million for border security. There are more feet on the ground at the border than at any time in the past. If the voters pay attention, The republicans will go nowhere in November except back to their caves for another 6 years.

  15. iamjimbo says:

Funny, tomwa… an exercise of contrast and compare will demostrate you are 180 degrees out of phase regarding who is dumbing down America.

  16. iamjimbo says:

I agree that President Obama’s administration has done much to strengthen our southern border in just two years as evidenced by the reduced number of illegal crossings.. I just never figured he’d keep the economy in such dire straits to take away the illegal’s incentive to come here.

  17. I am willing to give him credit where credit is due as well, though sending troops to the border is more for show than anything else. As Krauthamer says, you send a bunch of guardsmen down who sit around for awhile and then go home, and their going home is seldom reported by the media.

If you ask me, the so-called compassion folks want to show to the desperate people pouring out of Mexico is fraudulent. They are exploited for political purposes, and as iam points out, there’s not much here for them now that even legal citizens are jobless and becoming more desperate by the day.

  18. donjames says:

sozo, I love getting the foreign perspective on this trainwreck of an administration and congress from the UK Telegraph. Isn’t it conspicuously understandable why the most popular print media source in the UK is the Telegraph, and the most popular print media source in the US is the Wall Street Journal – two conservative-leaning media outlets. Especially in light of certain idiotic comments in this thread.

As for adam smith, I will concede that he is at least approachable – unlike his fellow liberal colleagues (mcdermott, baird, inslee, etc, etc, etc). Trouble is, while smith will talk to you, smile and shake you hand, he’s lifting your wallet with his free hand. Smith is a moderate… when it is politically expedient for him to be so. But the reality is he’s just another run-of-the-mil lib… with a bit more of a conscience.

    He needs to go.

  19. I smell toast! Oh, it’s only obumo and his RADICAL anti-constitution, anti-freedom, pro-huge government, pro huge taxes cronies!
    They are TOAST!

  20. Zillahboy says:

Joe, I don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh or Drudge and I usually always watch Wolf Blitzer rather than Glen Beck, but anyone who can get so much steam coming out of Sumner’s ears must be doing something right.

  21. oh, the irony

  22. Earth_watch says:

Iamjimbo, it’s difficult to refute empty lies. This letter’s author might as well have said, “The easter bunny lives in Bangledesh.” We all know that’s not true, but you pretend it is until we prove it’s wrong? Anyway, Sumner401 did directly point out incorrect statements in the letter.

However, there is one thing we agree on: vote Adam out… hopefully with a sincere representative. Left-liberals want Adam Smith out of office as much as right-wing conservatives do. The people who want him to remain are war-profiteers and head-in-the-sand moderates… unfortunately those people supply a lot of campaign donations and the majority of votes.

  23. BlaineCGarver says:

I fail to understand how anyone can watch The Trainwrecking of America and still drink the NoBama KookAid. Mrs Emelda Marcos Obama is finally fulfilling her Eboni Queen fantasy, and BoBo is the Chief Chicago Thug of Thugs….and everything America-wise is in worse shape than it was when he got elected, except he’s spread around enough of our tax dollars to maybe buy enough votes for the next go around….. America elected a demographic and is now paying for it through the nose.

  24. BlaineCGarver says:

I notice that the usual socialist/commie lobby still cannot muster logical point by point arguements….just more name calling.

  25. notice that the usual socialist/commie lobby still cannot muster logical point by point arguements….just more name calling.

Exactly how did your post present a “logical point by point arguement(sic)” instead of name calling?

“usual socialist/commie lobby”……was that your logical point by point argument?

  26. It is impossible to argue logically with people who have redefined meanings of words like Marxism, communism, socialism to include any and every government program that isn’t military.

  27. theogsters says:

Obama’s critics, this letter writer included, enjoy running fast and free with their labels: Socialist, Communist, Marxist, Islamist and more. Call the president what you will, he (and congress) had to act quickly to prevent our system from collapsing. In the process we also gave birth to health care and financial reform, put in motion our withdrawal from Iraq and set a course for eventual withdrawal from Afghanistan. None of these achievements is perfect or final but we’re doing the best we can with what we inherited from George Bush.

  28. Roncella says:

Theogsters, When will anything be President Obama’s to fix or correct or plan or be responsibile for, When ?

Every President comes to office and has to clean up unfinished business from the President before him. No one had a bigger clean up to do than did President Reagan. I was around and lived through Carter years.

I remember how horrible the interest rates were, the gas shortages, the price of gas, the hostages being held in Iran, No jobs, realestate at a stand still. President Reagan found a way out of all of it, including his making a monkey out of the Soviet Union and helping to Take Down This Wall Mr. G. .

He also found a way to restore Americans hope for their future and make us feel good about being American once again.

So far all I have heard from President Obama is how wrong America has been on foreign Policy and how we have treated other Countries. He has apoligized and bowed to Communist Leaders and Dictators around the World. He sided with the Mexican :President against the Governor of Arizona in the illegal Mexican Problem.

His idea of hope and change and yes we can, rings very hallow Now……..

  29. PrayforPeace, I’m flattered and humbled that you missed my predictable comments about commies. So I won’t let you down. I say vote out every commie liberal demokrat and send Patty Murray with her stinky tennis shoes back to the kitchen where she might do some good for someone. Demokrats are like dirty underwear, they need to be changed every once in a while. Satisfied?

  30. iamjimbo says:

… “running fast and free with labels”? Yous guys seem to have a very short, selective memory.
Toughen up yo, IF Barry manages to create enough dependents, and so forth, to get to a 2nd term, you’re going to need to learn to be less hyper-sensative.

  31. iamjimbo says:

“impossible to argue logically with people who have redefined meanings of words”… ROFLOL!

That’s a knee slapper B… especially coming from an admitted liberal! We all know liberals take the cake for redefining words.

  32. the3rdpigshouse says:

Hey beerBoy – here’s a challenge for ya – say something positive about your country and quit the continuous rationalizations for the marxist/socialist in the White House, the tax cheat in the U.S. Treasury, and the other anti-American communists and marxists in his staff of appointed commisars!!

  33. The politics of fear are all over this letter. But then that is all the right has to offer.

  34. klthompson says:

There is nothing more futile than attempting to win a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent. As I look at the various political signs along the roads I note that many signs promoting democrat incumbents do not use the phrase “reelect” choosing instead to use simply “elect”. Cowards!

  35. 3PH – I have plenty positive to say about my country but the idiocy of some of the citizens who keep misusing words they clearly don’t understand (socialist/marxist) isn’t one of them.

  36. My vote will count, Joseph.

  37. I implore everyone who is about to cast a vote this fall to watch this video clip of a coming documentary. Please. Just watch it.

  38. It looks like the sheep are praying for more water on this sinking ship.

  39. Oh cute….another black man making his name off of mouthing conservative BizzaroWorld talking points.

    Clarence Thomas….”electronic lynching”
    CL Bryant……”runaway slave”

Yah sure, ya betcha. They be just like Malcom X…….

  40. aislander says:

Ebbs hit the patellar tendon squarely with this letter, judging by all of the knees that are jerking. “Socialism” is just a right-wing talking point, with respect to describing Obamunism? I would love to see a persuasive argument that we have been moving toward GREATER economic freedom, which the Founders established as the direction for our nation…

  41. aislander says:

beerBoy wrote: “Oh cute….another black man making his name off of mouthing conservative BizzaroWorld talking points.”

I wasn’t aware that political orientation was a racial characteristic. To imply that it is seems, well, racist…

  42. the3rdpigshouse says:

I see Sumner401 and the herd of other leftist anti-American whack-jobs have descended upon this letter with gusto – Great Letter!!

  43. the3rdpigshouse says:

And leading the pack of leftist anti-Americans we have bB –

“I wasn’t aware that political orientation was a racial characteristic. To imply that it is seems, well, racist…”

Tell that to the 95% of “BLACKS” who voted for “OH-Bummer”!!!

  44. aislander says:

the3rdpigshouse wrote: “Tell that to the 95% of “BLACKS” who voted for “OH-Bummer”!!!”

I’m aware of racial voting patterns. All I’m saying is that those patterns are not transmitted through the genes that determine skin color and other racial characteristics, but by acculturation, indoctrination, habit and other factors that are separate from race. One of the most pernicious distortions by the left is that race and culture are synonymous. That, in itself, is racist…

  45. iamjimbo says:

Weired that someone would spend so much energy spelling “HAHA” over and over.
    Must have hit pay dirt.

  46. aislander says:

earth_watch wrote: “Anyway, Sumner401 did directly point out incorrect statements in the letter.”

To paraphrase Sumner401: No he didn’t. He DID attempt to dismiss Ebbs by setting up and knocking down straw men, and then he merely WROTE that Ebbs was incorrect without actually refuting anything he had alleged…

  47. iamjimbo says:

“They be just like Malcom X…….”

  48. Yep…..the offended white men keep calling “racist” at anyone who dares to point out that racism against blacks still is a problem in the US.

Once more the false canard that blacks are racist because they voted for Obama. Doesn’t work because the overall pattern is clear that blacks have been voting overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate since 1964.

Never suggested that politics were genetically determined. Did suggest that prominent conservative Blacks are rewarded with much attention and status from the conservatives because they are such as small minority (90% of Blacks vote Democratic and consider themselves Liberals).

The reference to Malcolm X was to his differentiation between a house slave and a field slave.

ij – you aren’t even trying to raise your rhetoric to a level above 3PH.

  49. iamjimbo says:

… it was your use of ebonics B…

Sozo provided a great link … “As per usual….you agree with the aspect that suits your partisan bias.”

  50. Roncella says:

Beerboy think about what you just said.

“90% of blacks vote Democratic and consider themselves Liberals”.

Did you ever think the reason for that is the Liberal Press and Black Liberal entertainers and extreme liberal Mins. Like Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton others, Liberal/Democratic Politicians who use the Blacks vote to get re-elected year after year.

What have the Blacks actually got for being beholding to the Democratic Party ?

I have to believe that as more Blacks get higher education and own their own Homes and Businesses they will begin to see a more Conservative point of view to alot of the problems we are facing today.

  51. Pray4Peace says:

yeah it’s really hard and takes an enormous amount of energy to hit the caps lock button then type two letters over and over.

What’s “weired” is how someone can spell weird so “weiredly” Also kooky.

  52. aislander says:

Since I have been away from the forum, P4P seems much less peaceful and much more testy than I recall. Is it the hot weather or the dismal poll numbers, I wonder…

  53. the3rdpigshouse says:

For the leftist bB – If 90% of “blacks” will always vote for a democrat, regardless of what the candidate believes and or supports, the U.S. is headed for big problems and serious turmoil in the future!! If you believe blacks do not represent a “thinking &/or principled” electorate but are mere followers/sheep subservient to the leader of the “democrat” herd, that is a sad testament to a proud race!

  54. iamjimbo says:

    …/ hypocritical bigot…

  55. Ron and 3PH – ………after 1964 the Dems got the Black vote and the Repubs got the Southern Strategy.

Lee Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, “N_____, n_____, n_____.” By 1968 you can’t say “n_____” — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N_____, n_____.

Apparently Dr. Laura didn’t get the memo…….

The updated Southern Strategy is to not use the “n” word but to label anyone who questions white privilege as a racist.

  56. Pray4Peace says:

Nah aislander, I live in an air conditioned house and really don’t give a rat’s patootie about poll numbers or even who’s in the White House or doing what to whom or saying what about whatever. I just come on here and read the same drivel over and over and can’t help but laugh at the not only the redundancy but the futility. You’ve got non-spelling, perspective providing, quote throwing iam there calling people kooky for whatever reasons he thinks are different from his. He’s made off color racial jokes and now he’s calling someone a “hypocritical bigot.”There’s frosty running around in circles like ‘chicken little’ screaming about commies on every corner and longing for the days of McCarthyism. Then there’s the pig of course acting like a petulant 3 year old saying “Don’t like him” as if it were brussel sprouts but he’s talking about Obummer the leftist/wacko/socialist etc. community organizer/thug from Chicago. sozo, what can I say sweet pumpkin? And don’t even get me started on the lefties that come riding in here on their high horse spewing their own self righteous, better than thou bile and rhetoric.
I read newspaper blogs from all over the country to learn from what others have to say about given situations and try to stay impartial and keep an open mind. It’s hard to do that here.
aislander, I have always appreciated because though you have at times even gone as far as singled me out and chided me about this or that have always seemed fair.
If I seem testy, I’m not. I’m just frustrated at the never ending quibble and name calling that all these “discourses” usually end up.
Maybe iam has some quote I said years ago to throw in my face. Go for it.

  57. I don’t know, p4p what can you say?

    Yours truly,
    Sweet Pumpkin
