MARINERS: Don Wakamatsu will be missed

It was upsetting to read the news of Don Wakamatsu’s firing (TNT, 8-10). He was brought in last year and with his direction turned the Mariners around and brought them up to a respectable place in the standings. He was praised for his wisdom and abilities as a manager. As fans, we were hopeful that this might be the year that we get a playoff berth.

Instead of supporting Wakamatsu when things started going downhill this year and attitude and behavioral issues started plaguing the team, general manager Jack Zduriencik and the rest of the front office decided he was the problem.

How can a man go from being such a good manager one year to being such a bad manager the next? My opinion: respect and money.

When the front office and Zduriencik stopped respecting Wakamatsu, the team stopped respecting him. They started losing games because they traded away most of their best players and kept just enough “fan favorites” to fill the seats.

I’m almost 70 years old and been a baseball fan my entire life. I’ve watched this game devolve from a game played for respect into one played for money. I know I can’t change anything. But I’m one man who will not spend another cent on this team. If we all decide to stop going to games, stop buying the merchandise and stop lining the pockets of the greedy businessmen who’ve ruined our pastime we might get them to understand that we’re tired of being losers.
