Re: “True believers keeping the faith and losing the religion” (Leonard Pitts Jr. column, 8-5.

I can appreciate what Anne Rice is saying in her refusal be anti-gay and anti-life. I would submit that there is a Christian-based (but not exclusively Christian) group, the Religious Society of Friends/Silent Worship, which allows the spirit of each individual to be valued and shared.

Quakers believe there is that of God in everyone. They seek religious truth in inner experience and place great reliance on conscience as the basis of morality. They integrate faith with their everyday life, with no preacher, no dogma that one must “swear to” to be worthy of participation. Everyone can have a direct, personal relationship with God without a priest or minister. Redemption and the Kingdom of Heaven are to be experienced now, in this world.

Quakers engage in human rights, social justice, freedom of conscience, environmental issues and community life. We are seekers and I invite Rice and others to visit our way that is open to all.

I, too, believe that Christianity “has no one to blame but itself.” It has become highly dogmatic, righteous and exclusive. However, I don’t feel this has to be the only way ~ just one of many. It is our individual choice and responsibility to find that spiritual ground that is satisfying for each of us while not excluding those who do not think alike. It is an inner personal concern and relationship with God, or Spirit or whatever title one may give it.
