BILLBOARDS: Council did public a disservice

Re: “City signs off on digital billboards” (TNT, 7-29).

It is apparent that billboard conglomerate Clear Channel is the clear winner in the Tacoma City Council legal settlement
to allow the company to install digital billboards.

These digital billboards are even more distracting and dangerous than ordinary billboards. Why did the council make a major public policy decision without proper notice for public participation?

The public has not been well served.

  1. I didn’t like the way the council went about the decision. But I’m not so sure digital billboards with the restrictions agreed to are more dangerous.

    Btw, why does a resident of Gig Harbor care?

    The Council rolled over, plain and simple. Clear Channel won by stalling, and nobody should be surprised if it’s found out later that they’ve been plying our politicians with money or favors this entire time.

    They just got played by a much smarter corporation. CC is transitioning from old-school paper billboards to modern digital ones. Yes, they are giving up a few hundred old billboards and rights to install a few hundred more, but I’ll bet they didn’t want them much longer anyway. It’s not like they are going to replace that many billboards with digital versions. Instead, they will keep their prime locations and replace the old with new there. I wonder if the council even negotiated with them … sounds like they just took CC’s initial offer and declared victory (and they probably believe it, too).

    That said, I do think our city will look nicer with a handful of digital billboards instead of the forest of ugly paper ones, mounted on rusting poles. (Have you ever looked at most of the poles these things are on? They’re even uglier than the ads themselves!)

    Also, from what I know of them (not much), they don’t sound all that bad to me. I think they are more Kindle than TV screen, for sure. Not these huge glowing animated things that some people are afraid of. Ultimately, I think we could have gotten a better deal, but I’m looking forward to the future anyway.

    If you are driving….and not texting, talking on your cell phone, drinking a beverage, putting on makeup, etc., then the billboards shouldn’t be a distraction….duh.
