PIERCE TRANSIT: Tax is no way to balance budget

Re: “Bus plan calls for tax” (TNT, 7-11).

I find it amazing that Pierce Transit board members feel that it is necessary to preserve service and add buses and hours of operation in this severe economic downturn. The agency is running buses around Tacoma now that are far less than capacity, paying out-of-control union wages and benefits, providing cost-of-living raise increases.

If passenger fares account for only 14 percent of operating budget, then they are running an agency that is fiscally not sustainable. If this were a private business, it would be out of business.

Taxing is not an appropriate method of balancing the budget. Pierce Transit needs to get its house in order.
