Over the past 15 years, Sprinker Recreation Center has been under the watch of three different Pierce County executives and numerous County Council members. Most ignored it while taxpayer funds were poured into other pet projects.
Over those same years, Sprinker continued to limp along while loyal facility maintenance staff used Band-Aids, duct tape and even buckets in the ceiling, to hold her together.
While Sprinker quietly rotted away, new parks and ballfields were designed, property was acquired and the Foothills Trail built, and the Chambers Bay Golf Course was developed.
And all the while, Sprinker sat grandly out in Spanaway – home to blue-collar workers and thousands of kids on free and reduced lunch programs. It proudly produced champion figure skaters and champion tennis players, and nobody from the County Council noticed. Money kept being spent on new, higher-profile projects in higher-profile, higher-income communities.
We are fighting for Sprinker’s life. We’ve loved the center despite its rain-stained ceiling tiles and tattered and torn carpets. But now, it’s time to revitalize it.
It’s long past time for the county to step up and do the right thing. Make the necessary repairs to keep the facility open while developing plans and financing options for a complete renovation. Save Sprinker for the next generation.
