SAFEWAY: Proctor remodel lived up to challenge

When Safeway announced plans to exand their North Proctor Street Store, a windowless block wall abutting the Proctor Street sidewalk was proposed. Dan Voelpel’s newspaper article followed expressing the Proctor Districts concerns (TNT, 9-20-2007). My letter to the editor was also published, encouraging Safeway to develop a first-class store.

Safeway has responded to the challenge, building a store that enhances the neighborhood and provides customers with a joyful shopping experience. It’s worth a visit.

  1. I wanna know one thing.

With these stores installing all those ‘self serve” check out lanes, if I have to scan do the work of the checker, and since Safeway is obviously saving on having a lane where they don’t have to pay a checkers salary, why don’t we get a discount on the stuff we take through that line?

Somehow doesnt seem right that we would pay the same amount, while doing the work ourselves.

Since I don’t get a discount, I’ll just go back through the old fashioned line where I get some service and a smile!

  2. I like the speed of the self-service checkouts. So I generally use them.

My main issue about self-service checkouts is that some stores like the Fred Meyer store on Stevens don’t have enough of them.

The Safeway store in Proctor seems to currently have enough. I’ve never had to wait yet.

However, receiving a discount would be nice.

Anyhow, the Proctor store is a big improvement over the old store. My only complaint is that sometimes you have to park across the street now.

I do agree that the new store with its added amenities is wonderful.

However, I have generally found that getting ‘service and a smile’ is not that easy. The last time there I used the self serve checkout and needed some help. The attendant came over and said, “You screwed up, huh?”

  4. The new store will go very nicely with Billy Evans $272,000.00 brick inlaid intersection at 26th !

  5. I am NEVER using the self-check lines in any store. Even at Costco they ring it up and bag it for you. Service is what keeps me as a customer, everywhere.,
