UPLACE: Appraise, then sell Town Center land

After attending Monday’s University Place City Council meeting, I was actually starting to believe the trip to Las Vegas to promote Town Center might have been worth the money spent. It was interesting to find out that the Realtor hired to sell/lease space at Town Center can’t; there has been no value put to the units.

Unfortunately it took a turn for the worse as Ken Grassi gave his summary. He started by saying this was the first time they have had collateral and a vision to present (it took 6-plus years) and then started describing how Town Center needs to have a theme like the Las Vegas casinos. He said we should go with a golf theme to tie in Chambers Bay and Town Center with putt-putt courses throughout Town Center.

The council members’ inability to drop the notion that they are the developers of this land is inexcusable. Our city is in near financial ruins, and the discussion is about putt-putt golf? Does the University Place City Council really want to be known as the council that led to the city’s bankruptcy filing?

It needs to stop wasting our time, money and patience. Get an appraisal of the property and sell the land. We need to get our debt ratio under control before it is too late.

    Why are we not surprised? UP has become the laughing stock of Pierce County. Kudos to Greg and others who keep a diligent eye on the council. History has proven how dangerous they can be when left to their own devices; devices which have become our demise. Just take a look back at the Sept 2009 newsletter, pages 3 & 4 5 to see an excellent and recurring example of the deception they spew forth. The headline reads “Town Center underway” where we see 4 photos of buildings, none of which is in the Town Center, including Trader Joe’s which had been in the privately owned Green Firs Shopping Center for many years. Will we ever get a straight or truthful word from this council? Perhaps the best answer is bankruptcy or annexation to Tacoma, Lakewood or Fircrest….if any of them would have us.

    Excellent letter Mr Bodhain! … and I agree….appraise the land and then sell it to a developer….and for Heaven’s sake, DON’T micro-manage them; leave the developement of Town Center to DEVELPOERS!

    Where does the proposal for a movie theatre fit into this scene? How could the city agree to sign a contract with Neil Wallace and not have value on the property they were supposed to sell/lease?
    How much money would a theatre or putt putt golf course bring into the city’s coffer?

    So if I understand this correct we’ll be the the town that has outlet stores with a mini golf course in it?

    Will somebody volunteer to go over Grassi’s statements with him before he makes them public?

    I said it before and I’ll say it again. The only thing town center has accomplished is getting Ken and his buddies upgraded office space. Oh yeah, covered parking so all that big hair doesn’t get messed up in the rain too…

    How right you are, but don’t forget the theatre and hotel. On the brighter side, we will have a library adorned above by a beautiful temple where we can present our alms (taxes) for the same….

    AND does the main city flag at the fire station come under the “lower sign” act?
    Does anyone care about America?
