VETERANS: Show a little compassion, please

I belong to an online veterans listserv, and over the past day or two, reports have been pouring in of vets feeling out of sorts, listless, sad, having nightmares, wanting to isolate, etc. One list member summed it up by saying “something creepy is going on.” Another might have hit the nail on the head by remarking that after decades of therapy, he has realized that all the hoopla and ever-present reminders in the form of sales, tributes, etc., at this time of year can serve as triggers to vulnerable vets.

If you have a military veteran, especially a combat veteran, within your circle, now might be a good time to reach out with a listening ear or a helping hand. The mere gesture might make a world of difference to a veteran who feels forgotten amid all the national hype.

  1. As a veteran of the Vietnam war and over 20 years of service, I’m getting a little tired of the constant drumbeat from some veterans who seem to be unable to get on with their lives. I grew up in an era of veterans from WWII and Korea who saw extensive combat and somehow managed to put it behind them without the continous and quite frankly tiresome (I hate to use the word), whining. Many of my friends have Purple Hearts, Silver Stars, Bronze Stars with “V” device etc., I don’t hear them crying for more public attention. This constant drone from those who feel that they have not received enough attention will, over time, turn the public against the needs of real heros. Some of these self-proclaimed heros leave a sour taste with me and can only wear out the good will of the American people if they don’t control their thirst for more attention.

I figure that if they want to whine they should enlist and do what the Veterans have done, serve the country get off you behind and do what we the Veteran did in all of the wars that have been fought.. Bring back the DRAFT!!!
