TACOMA: City Council misguided about Arizona

We just got back from five months in beautiful Arizona. As a longtime resident of Tacoma, I could not believe that the Tacoma City Council would waste its time jumping on the bandwagon to condemn Arizona for passing Senate Bill 1070.

If anyone were to live in the Phoenix area and listen to the local news, they would soon understand what has so frustrated and infuriated the citizens of that state: the murders by alien gangs, the robberies, the smuggling across the border of hundreds of frightened people by the ruthless bands of “coyotes,” the drug traffickers turning the ranching area south of Tucson into a no-man’s land. The list goes on and on.

Unlike most people, including our president, I actually read SB 1070. It essentially states that Arizona will enforce existing federal immigration laws. It does not allow law enforcement officials to randomly check peoples immigration status, unless there is probable cause that a public offense has been committed.

There are enough issues involving our own city without the City Council so sanctimoniously sticking its nose in an issue of which it knows nothing about or is any of its business, If anything, the council should ask the Washington congressional delegation what it is doing to support federal Immigration law enforcement.
