A News Tribune editorial asserts that consideration of what is going on in Arizona is an issue outside the Tacoma City Council’s purview. It notes that four hours of public testimony were presented on this topic. That would indicate that the public’s concern, pro and con, makes it the council’s business.
This business community’s talking point – that the issue is “outside their purview” _ parroted by the editorial, is convenient and cynical. Many of the same people who now complain about consideration of Arizona’s desperate act are the same people who complained when a coalition of Republicans and Democrats brought forward a national solution to the illegal immigration problem.
There are an estimated 200,000 undocumented workers in Washington. These people, as well as more than 400,000 in Arizona, are here to work. But current law means that they have to work in the shadows and at lower wages than other workers will accept. This is exactly the result that some employers want.
To some extent we all benefit in the short term by lower prices. But in the long run we all suffer as neighbor attacks neighbor. Our immigration laws are broken, and only open consideration of the complexities stands any chance of resolving the problems.
Silence only serves the illegitimate purposes of some employers who want to keep the low-wage party going.
