MARINERS: TNT trying to push Griffey off the team

It was with dismay that I have read the disingenuous efforts by three sports writers for The News Tribune to have Ken Griffey Jr. pushed off of the Mariner team.

It is unprofessional for these writers to base their stories on the testimony of “anonymous Mariners players.” These players have displayed their lack of committment to their team. The sports writers are using these anonymous players to vindicate their attacks on Ken.

True to form, Griffey is rising above the tactless attacks rather than sinking to the level of the writers.

I’m not a fan of major league baseball but as a onetime participant in organized athletics I have an opinion as to what to do about anonymous sources for news articles. The Mariners management should do whatever is necessary to determine who, if any, members of the team were the source for the article and promptly send them back to the minors..

How is it unprofessional for sports writers to write about an aging player that can’t hit, run, or play defense. I think it is unprofessional to draw a pay check for a job that isn’t being done. Larry is doing his job, and until Griffey puts the hitter back in the roles of designated HITTER and pinch HITTER he’s not doing his. You know what’s unprofessional is when Jr demanded a trade and acted like a kid till he got it. And we got a consolation prize in Cameron but he was no hall of famer in his prime.
If Griffey is here to be a leader and inspire the youth do you think being outed by a couple of young players counts as inspiring leadership? How about turning your back on the team while their fighting to win a game and he’s sleeping or whatever he does in the clubhouse.
This whole Griffey thing is just like politics in this country. No accountability. Instead we get mad over someone pointing out the wrongs of the guy/gal we like and then shift the blame. If you want to shift the blame from your under achieving messiah blame the kids that talked. Not the reporters that are doing their job of reporting. Get a clue.

Griffey was once a good player, and it’s pretty obvious that a lot of people idolize him even after he’s way past his prime. Do you remember the Cincinnati trade demands? I do, and I saw his return to Seattle as the last gasp of a has-been who couldn’t get a job anywhere else. It’s not as though I hate the guy, but baseball is a business, and there comes a time when those athletes need to hang up the cleats. I understand that he was brought in to be a role model and mentor to younger players, but this story alone says it obviously isn’t working anymore. It was also pretty lame how Wakamatsu and some of the older players, Sweeney in particular, circled the wagons. It could have been handled much more gracefully. It’s quite obvious by the lack of denials that the story is true, but instead of dealing with it honestly, they attack the reporter. Wakamatsu lost my respect totally, and Sweeney is simply a pap smear.
