MARINERS: Lay off of Ken Griffey Jr.

Re: News Tribunes articles on Ken Griffey Jr. sleeping during a game.

Quoting anonymous sources in a story is something that investigative journalists do to protect the lives of people who come forward with information that is important enough for them to risk everything, not something a sports journalist does to promote a story line.

Griffey is someone who is very important to Northwest sports. His style and spirit for the game inspire baseball fans all over the world, and that’s something that deserves more than a trash story backed up by anonymous sources.

I enjoy reading my hometown rag, but if I were a betting man, and if I had to choose between Griffey playing in the major leagues, hopefully in Seattle in 2012, and The News Tribune being in existence, I would put my money on Griffey.

    Sheesh Mr. Read,

With the economy, troops still fighting and dying in two wars, oil spills, tornadoes, floods, and attempted terrorist attacks – you are this concerned about a pampered pro athlete to write a letter – especially one who gets paid way more than he produces?

Get real….one wonders how people can continue to support the high pay of these athletes even if they provide championships.

The only thing worse than your letter wasting space is the fact that TNT actually made the effort to post such twaddle.

Mr. Read- a fool and his money…

  3. Wow, Bobby, I’m speechless !

    Your Serious, weren’t you ?

Do you actually like watching Griffey make U-turns at the plate and go straight back to the dug out? It makes me sad to see someone I once admired look silly and way out of his league.
Why show such loyalty to a man that hurt this club by forcing a bad trade. Do you remember the horrible trade he forced Gillick to make. Sure Cameron was a great defensive player but we traded a hall of famer in his prime for a guy no one will remember in 10 yrs after Cameron retires.
The only reason he came back is no other team wanted a guy that just can’t play the game anymore. He can’t play defense any more, he obviously isn’t a leader in the clubhouse anymore if players are outing him. Which of the 5 tools that are required to be a good baseball player does Griffey still have?
I support Larry for posting a story that he had to know would bring a backlash against him. The guy has been reporting on the M’s as long as I can remember why would he fabricate a story like this. The problem isn’t Larry or the TNT it’s the players that didn’t keep this matter in the club house. It’s Griffey’s for not doing the job he gets paid to do. It’s Larry’s job to report all things M’s. That’s why I read Larry’s articles.

Oh never mind I realize now you had to be joking.

  6. Roncella says:

Griffey was alot of fun to watch when he was in his prime. However, both he and the Team need to consider what his contribution to their success is now.

You have to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. He’s got the
funds he should retire from baseball and start a new career.

  7. Can someone enlighten me?

While I live a quiet productive life, I appear to have missed something. Who is Ken Griffey?

  8. Just my opinion, but I feel the 2 million dollar salary that the Mariners paid for Griffeys services for 2010, was not for what he would accomplish on the ballfield but to pull more paying fans into Safeco Field.Very much like the singers that are past their prime but still draw in fans that remember them from better days .
