ELENA KAGAN: Jurist ‘identities’ vs. qualifications

Five words into Patrick O’Callahan’s column (TNT, 5-12), he sets the tone for the entire piece. He implies that Elena Kagan shouldn’t be considered for the Supreme Court because she isn’t an evangelical Protestant. And she went to Harvard, and she’s from New York, and Ivy League chools are intolerant, and on and on.

All I can say is, “I dream of a day when we are judged by the content of our character, and not the color of our skin, or ethnic identity, or religious affiliation, or gender or…..”

This whole column is “fail.”

  1. LuckyCharm says:

Carol, this column, along with the editorial about criminal/terrorist interrogations, demonstrates why so much of the TNT’s readership (such as myself) is migrating to the more cosmopolitan Seattle Times. I could hardly believe that a senior editor would actually pen this nonsense for all to read. Who gives a flyin’ flip about what religion a judge professes? Shouldn’t it be about impartiality and ability to interpret the Constitution as well as legal precedents?

  2. Patrick was being sarcastic…

“cosmopolitan”… did you quit shaving your legs and under arms yet???

  3. LuckyCharm says:

Did you even read it, jim?

  4. beerBoy says:

ij – I didn’t see the [/sarcasm] disclaimer and didn’t read any sarcasm into the article. It was, however, rather bizarre in its claim for victimhood for evangelicals based upon the results of one poll judging Ivy league “warmness” v. “coolness” towards literal interpreters of the Bible.

  5. LuckyCharm says:

This, coupled with the straight-from-Fox-News editorial on Eric Holder and Miranda warnings, which ran on opposite pages, goes a long way to explain this newspaper’s culture, as well as some of the capricious and arbitrary behavior of the board nanny & friends. Is Roger Ailes now one of McClatchy’s major shareholders?

  6. LuckyCharm says:

Clarification: I didn’t mean the editorial was actually plagiarized word for word, just that the fundamental attack on Holder was based on one sentence taken completely out of context, à la Faux News.

  7. Roncella says:

    LuckyCharm, Seattle times Cosmopolitan ??!!!

LuckyCharm You would feel more comfortable with the Seattle Times, its an extreme Liberal Rag Sheet, printed for the extreme liberals living in Seattle.

  8. Can you link the Fox story you keep referencing Cheryl?

  9. Eric Holder and Miranda warnings … google it

it may take awhile to find the FOX strawman Cheryl keeps knocking down…

    (kooky, I’m carrying Peter’s water … he’s a lib and I’m a conservative…)

  10. LuckyCharm says:

jim, you need better bifocals or something — I posted the link just above your previous comment. Didn’t bother to put text with it, ’cause it didn’t seem merited. Just click the URL.

  11. Oh… I did. That’s why I said it’ll take awhile to find the strawman you keep bullying.

Yes, FOX ran an opinion piece about Miranda… a FAR cry from “straight-from-Fox-News editorial”.

Eric Holder and Miranda warnings … google it… you’ll find many more stories similar to the opinion FOX ran and the TNT editorial… but you singled out FOX…

  12. Roncella says:

Imjim, Just think about his for one min. LuckyCharm and other Liberals want to discredit Fox News when ever they can honestly or otherwise. Even the President of the United States takes time from his busy schedule to criticize Fox News.

Lets take a communication inventory. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, Public Television, Late night Clown shows, letterman, Stewart, Sat nite Live, all lean from very far left to left in their comments about the news, but who do the Liberals go after for any mis-statements or comments they don’t agree with ?? Answer, Fox News….which is the only cable channel which leans Right……..I guess to a Liberal/Progessive thats fair…….in their reasoning abiltiy.

  13. LuckyCharm says:

Ron, that’s like complaining that there are only two tabloids next to the supermarket checkout counter, but half a dozen REAL newspapers near the front door.

Furthermore, I’ll let you in on a little secret. When I accused Fox News, I hadn’t actually read anything there. But when challenged to produce it, I was able to do so without any effort at all. Know why? They’re SO predictable in their lies and bias!

Lastly, we blame Fox mostly because it’s kinda the springboard for all other right-wing talk. Anything completely bat-crap crazy that you see on the web has its roots somewhere in Fox News.

    That help?

  14. All you proved, Cheryl, is a genuine case of selective outrage and an amazing ability to knock down strawmen. Fox was one of MANY outlets that ran a peice on Holder’s position on Miranda, and it was more than a stretch for you to characterize it as ” straight-from-Fox-News editorial “…

I’ll let you in on a little secret… seems you and Holder have something in common… he didn’t read the Az immigration bill before he opened his pie-hole… either.
