ENERGY: Pave the way to a cleaner future

Waking up to 210,000 gallons spewing into the Gulf of Mexico every day has re-awakened me to the absolute need to get on with the clean energy revolution. This tragic event is one huge reminder that we cannot continue our dangerous dependence on fossil fuels.

Our dependence is a direct threat to our national security. This massive spill is a clear reminder of the environmental and economic dangers we face as well.

We already know the answer. We need to reduce our dependence on oil, invest in clean energy sources – like wind, solar and geothermal – reduce carbon pollution from emissions and manmade disasters like this one, and create new jobs by developing clean energy sources here in America.

Our leaders in Washington face a clear choice: end our destructive addiction to oil and dirty fossil fuels or pave the way to a clean energy future.

If we want to truly protect our environment, our national security and our economic well-being, the president and Congress must step up their efforts to pass comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation. I urge Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell to ensure this happens immediately.

Lawmakers must heed the lessons learned from this disaster. We cannot wait for another tragedy before we take action.
