PUYALLUP: You just can’t make this stuff up

While Puyallup is spiraling toward red ink ($10 million, one source has revealed), would you expect cost savings measures and frugality to be in place? Unfortunately not.

Puyallup and Sumner are both required by law to conduct utility rate studies. Puyallup paid its favorite consultant three times what Sumner paid for basically the same study. It was far from being the low bid, which should have been a clue that something was up.

Puyallup, by my calculations, will throw more than $100,000 from various buckets of funds to its favorite nonprofit (Valley Arts). This includes free rent, services and cash.

Puyallup won’t even consider studying moving from its rented Municipal Court to vacant City Hall space. One City Council member claimed that “most traffic offenders are druggies and we don’t want them here.” She should know better.

Puyallup’s promised reduced tax on utilities to offset the fire protection taxes only affected one out of five utility bills. I won’t even address the millions wasted on futile litigation by the city attorney. You just can’t make that stuff up.
