I don’t know about anybody else, but if a teacher gets convicted of touching a person inappropriately, I do not want that person teaching my children – or anyone else’s, for that matter.

To suspend their teaching license for three years just is not good enough. I suppose we should let Mary Kay Letourneau take up teaching again, too.

When do we stop feeling sorry for the perpetrator and start protecting the victims?

Radio and print media do a good service advising ferry users of cancellation of runs because of low tides.

Tide charts are published more than a year in advance. Why doesn’t the state ferry system just not list those runs it knows will not be operating?

No one will ever argue that the pursuit of peace is anything but admirable. It would be wonderful indeed if we lived in a world where everyone were motivated by their “better angels” instead of base human desires.

I can even agree with the anti-nuke protesters that there is a greater good resulting from a world without any nuclear weapons. What I can’t seem to grasp is the naive outlook these protesters have, blissfully unaware that there is a world where evil exists.

I write this as I sit in my car in the parking lot of Weyerhaeuser corporate headquarters. It is early morning, and the warm lights from inside the building are glowing and welcoming. I can see a few bodies wandering to and from on the fourth floor.

It calls to mind many of the incredibly talented, enthusiastic and dedicated Weyerhaeuser employees from the past who are now nothing more than a name on a file box, a data file, a query, a memory. Though a British court found Al Gore’s scare-film had more factual holes than Swiss cheese, the most “Inconvenient Truth” is Mother Nature’s. While we rejoice over snowshoers rescued on Snoqualmie Pass, the snow quietly falls across the nation to testify against global warming quackery. Florida manatees flock to power-plant warm water to survive.

Abandoning the 1970s’ global cooling craze, activists joined Gore’s bandwagon. Shouldn’t we be more wary of politicians who invest in stocks, then write law forcing us to by their product?

Does the Puyallup School Board really know best?

Tony Apostle, Superintendent, has taken it upon himself (cleverly disguised in the form of a committee) that a reconfiguration is in order for Puyallup schools.

He has proposed taking ninth-graders from junior highs and cramming them into high schools to the tune of 2,500 students to occupy a building with a 1,250 capacity. Is this supposed to be a better high school experience?

Admit it, Democrats, you have been lied to your whole lives and you just keep believing it.

You were told by President Obama that the reason for our poor economy was because George Bush cut the taxes on the rich. Obama just signed a bill to keep the taxes at the same level. You were told by President Roosevelt that his “New Deal” would end the Great Depression. It made it last longer and longer. As someone who has lived with the Rev. Bill Bichsel in the Catholic Worker community, has been to jail with him and knows his associates, I want to respectfully take issue with the editorial board’s perception that he and associates live in a “wishful thinking world” (editorial, 12-15).

To the contrary, they all live and serve in the “real world” of hunger, poverty and homelessness in a nation that trusts in instruments of violence and spends way over half its discretionary budget on arms instead of on human needs.
