Jayne Ashby wanted everyone to know you could fight ovarian cancer, and for years she did so in an effort to attend her daughter’s college graduation on May 10.
Yesterday, she lost that battle. Jayne Ashby, a wife, mother and friend to many in Tacoma, died in her home near Chicago.
The column on Jayne and her family, husband Chuck Jackel and daughter Lauren, was a difficult one to read. A lifetime Tacoma resident, Jayne had met Chuck at Stadium High School and married him in 1987. The two moved to Illinois in the spring of 2011, where their daughter was in college and Jayne was going to go for her doctorate.
Diagnosed in August of 2011, Jayne – a former marathon runner – set May 10, 2013 as a goal soon after. That’s when Lauren was scheduled to graduate from Loyola.
When we talked a few weeks ago, she was realistic.
“The graduation is going to be a challenge,” she acknowledged. “It’s hard getting up, getting going each day. My goal is to be at the graduation.”
One month short of that goal, Jayne died. She was 44.
