Larry's LaRue-minations

A Happy 25th anniversary to … me

Long before there were blogs, tweets or even much in the way of internet,  I fell in love and stayed there.

A beautiful pride and a soon-to-be annoying husband.
A beautiful bride and a soon-to-be annoying husband.

And 25 years ago today, Marie Ohl became Marie Ohl-LaRue, taking my then-10-year-old daughter and me into her heart.

In the quarter of a century since, she has given me up to major league baseball one season at a time. Now, she sees more of me as a columnist, which is not entirely a good thing.

Marie and my daughter, Jessica, have decreed me The Most Annoying Man in the World. Having spent much of my life in clubhouses and newsrooms, I argue it’s an undeserving title, but it has stuck.

According to the women who know me best, I grouse, whine, manipulate – unsuccessfully! – find myself hysterically funny when I’m not and am, in general, a doofus.

Truth is, I adore my wife as much today as the day we wed. And my daughter, now a strong-willed, independent woman, is the pride of my life. They could be right. If so, I’m also one of the luckiest of men, because even when they find me annoying, they say they still love me.

A lesser man might find the ‘most annoying man’ title so belittling he’d lose his sense of self. I am not a lesser fellow. I see myself fighting windmills, doing only good, being thoughtful and sensitive, kind to small animals – except ferrets! – and beloved by all who know me.

Since most of that is delusional, it could be a bit …. annoying. Well, Happy Anniversary, darlin’!  I’ve had a great 25 years. Hope you’ve had almost as many.
