TEACHER, GUNMAN KILLED

Jennifer Paulson, 30, was killed about 90 minutes before school started at Birney Elementary School. Her killer, Jed R. Waits, 30, had waited outside the school before the shooting.

Fatal accident on I-5

Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash on the curved off-ramp from northbound Interstate 5 to westbound 38th Street. It appeared the driver missed the curve and vaulted over the embankment. The car was going fast enough to stay airborne about 70 feet. The car cleared a five-foot chain link fence near the pond before diving down into the water and flipping over on its top.

Hike of the week

Fort Steilacoom Park is located at 8714 87th Ave. S.W. Take I-5
exit 125. Turn left onto Bridgeport Way, left again onto Steilacoom
Boulevard. In about 1.2 miles turn left onto 87th Ave SW and then a right
into the Park. Drive past the children’s play area and find the parking area
between the dog run and the barns.
