Black leads Washington Open with 67; defending champ 5 back

There weren’t too many golfers under-par, but Rainier Golf and Country Club’s Darren Black was one of them, firing a 4-under-par 67 to take the first round lead at the Washington Open Invitational at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue.

Lynden’s Tim Feentra, out of Seattle Golf Club, is the defending champion. He shot a 1-over 72.

I was not there – and won’t be until the final round Wednesday (hopefully with better weather than the field endured Monday … rain, rain and rain!).

My bud Craig Smith, a former Seattle Times reporter, had this account from opening play Monday. …

Michael Putnam, Troy Kelly, Andres Gonzales at Byron Nelson, 4th Rd.

This week: HP Byron Nelson Championship, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Four Seasons Resort, Irving, Texas.

Gonzales’ fourth-round score: Even-par 70.

Position: Gonzales (3-under 277) tied for 19th, eight strokes behind winner Jason Dufner (67) at 11-under 269. Putnam (6-over 146) and Kelly (7-over 147) missed the cut Friday.

Recap: If you count Gonzales’ 2011 season-ending showing at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital Classic (career-best tied-for-16th) when he was a PGA Tour member, the Capital High graduate has posted back-to-back top-20 finishes. Gonzales opened with 12 consecutive pars Sunday, then rolled in a 16-foot birdie putt at No. 13. He gave …

This week: HP Byron Nelson Championship, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Four Seasons Resort, Irving, Texas.

Gonzales’ third-round score: 1-under-par 69.

Position: Gonzales (3-under 207) is tied for 18th, five strokes behind leader Jason Dufner (69), who is at 8-under 202. Putnam (6-over 146) and Kelly (7-over 147) missed the cut Friday.

Recap: After landing a pitching-wedge approach close on the ninth hole to set up a 5-foot birdie putt, Gonzales made the turn at 5-under for the tournament, and just two shots off the lead. But he three-putt from 48 feet on the short par-4 11th for a bogey, and …

Gonzales, Gove entered at next week’s Washington Open Invitational

It might not be the pure PGA Tour representation of last year when University Place’s Michael Putnam and Olympia’s Andres Gonzales decided to play in the Washington Open Invitational at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue.

The Nationwide Tour flavor ain’t bad.

Gonzales, who finished third at the 2011 championship behind winner Tim Feenstra, is currently No. 2 on the Nationwide Tour money list – with a victory at the Soboba Golf Classic in California.

Gove, out of Seattle, has been a Nationwide Tour member since 2011. Before that, he had played six seasons on the PGA Tour between 2000 and …

Putnam (6-over 146) and Kelly (7-over 147) missed the cut.

Recap: With four bogeys in 10 holes, Gonzales was reeling. And really what salvaged his day was an up-and-down in front of the seventh green for birdie. His pitch shot from 30 yards stopped below the hole, and he …

Whitaker only golfer to tie up Rope Rider Course in U.S. Open qualifying

Cle Elum’s Dan Whitaker seems to have a knack of knowing how to survive at United States Golf Association tournaments.

On Thursday at U.S. Open local qualifying, he was the only man in the field to break par at windy Rope Rider Golf Course at the Suncadia Resort.

Aided by a ninth-hole eagle from the fairway, Whitaker shot a 1-under-par 71 to nab medalist honors.

California Joshua Wood and East Wenatchee’s Kevin PomArleau also sewed up berths to sectional qualifying as co-runners-up at even-par 72. PomArleau is the reigning state mid-amateur champion.

With seven spots available, five golfers at 1-over …

Back-to-back bogeys at the 12th and 13th holes interrupted the streak, but he finished strong with birdies at No. …
