Winter storm creates trouble for local courses

You can almost assume, across the board that every golf course in the South Sound took a huge brunt of the recent winter storm – especially to on-site tree lines.

At Allenmore Golf Course, the mess was significant – starting right behind the first hole where limbs of trees fell into power lines and into South 19th Street.

On Wednesdays, marshals and regulars of the course spent hours cleaning up branches and other fallen debris so it could open to the public Thursday.

“Pretty much every tree had some branches down, or some damage done to it,” said Taylor Ferris,

Positive early reaction to RMG Club memberships

The parties, including PGA Tour golfer Ryan Moore, figured it would take a while for the public to catch on to the RMG Club – a new course management company which now operates The Classic, McCormick Woods and Oakbrook.

Early signs have been surprisingly quick-latching and favorable.

As of Tuesday, Mike Moore, the CEO of RMG Club, said 156 memberships have been sold. Most of them are all-access to the three courses.

“I think it was a good surprise,” Mike Moore said. “We thought since folks traveled for holidays, it would take most of January to get 100. To get

2010 U.S. Amateur champion Uihlein turns pro in Europe

From the Associated Press

Former U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein is turning pro and is willing to travel.

In a decision that reflects the changing nature of a global game, Uihlein announced Monday he would not return for his final semester at Oklahoma State and will begin his career exclusively on the European Tour, not only through sponsor exemptions but even on Europe’s second-tier Challenge Tour.

Uihlein, one of America’s top prospects, signed with Chubby Chandler of British-based International Sports Management, joining a stable that includes Lee Westwood, British Open champion Darren Clarke and Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.

Specific look at each phase of Chambers Bay changes

I posted something about this a month ago. Since a story published today – and we teased to the Green Scene – here is the work expected to be done in each phase:

PHASE I, Oct. 20
First hole - Entire green will have new sod, and the area short right of the putting surface will be softened. The hole will be closed starting Oct. 20 for roughly six weeks. Golfers will play the 10th hole twice.

Chambers Bay ready for another USGA-mandated facelift

After a lengthy tour Tuesday morning with general manager Matt Allen, I wanted to get at least an overview of the changes that will occur at Chambers Bay over the next few months (and a story will publish next week sometimes):

The tweaks were all highly recommended by United States Golf Association officials on site visits since the 2010 U.S. Amateur in August:

All work will be done in distinct phases:

PHASE I, Oct. 20
First hole - Entire green will have new sod, and the area short right of the putting surface will be softened. The hole will be closed starting Oct. 20 for roughly six weeks. Golfers will play the 10th hole twice.

Another Moore in a USGA championship (hint, papa)

For all the times Mike Moore has followed his son at the most prestigious amateur golf tournaments in the country, this weekend is his turn.

After seven qualifying tries to get into United States Golf Association championships, the 58-year-old owner of The Classic Country Club in Spanaway – and father of PGA Tour professional Ryan Moore – got into the 57th U.S. Senior Men’s Amateur, which starts Saturday in Virginia.

Moore tees off at Kinloch Golf Club for the first round of stroke play at 5:30 a.m. PDT off the first tee. The 156-player field will be reduced to the top 64 for the start of match play Monday.

His accomplished son cannot be there – Ryan is preparing for the third FedEx Cup playoffs event in Illinois next week – but his youngest son, Jason, will caddie for him at the U.S. Senior Amateur.

Jason, who is also a good golfer, caddies for Ryan on the PGA Tour.

“Part of playing kids who beat me all the time … they show me no mercy,” Mike Moore said. “Ryan takes me back to the back tee. And when I ask for strokes, he gives me nothing.

“I am used to seeing golf courses from their eyes.”
