Garber, Fitzgibbons win inaugural AJGA Ryan Moore Junior Championship

Make no mistake, the American Junior Golf Association demands a lot of time and resources. It is like a mini-PGA Tour for junior golf, holding world-class tournaments in 30 different states across the country.

So imagine the collective air of excitement from the top teenagers in Washington who were able to finally play an AJGA event in their home state – and one sponsored by a high-profile touring professional in Puyallup’s Ryan Moore.

Even if the PGA Tour veteran was allowed to hand-pick the winners beforehand, he would have been hard-pressed to choose two more deserving champions of the inaugural

With one round to go, Kao, Fitzgibbons lead AJGA Ryan Moore tournament

Two late birdies propelled Jefferson Kao to the top of the boys’ leaderboard after two rounds of the AJGA Ryan Moore Junior Championship at RMG Club at Oakbrook on Wednesday.

The Walnut, Calif. golfer shot an even-par round of 70, and sits solo in the lead at 4-under 136.

Right on Kao’s tail are a pair of local products – overnight leader RJ Manke (73) and Gregory Gildea (69), Bellarmine Prep’s top golfer last spring. Clarkston’s Joseph Baldeck III rounds out the second-place trio at 2-under 138.

Kao birdied the 17th hole to take a two-stroke lead.

Yun’s gutsy shot at No. 17 sews up win at 20th Sahalee Players Championship

SAMMAMISH – As much as his golf-related travels have taken him up and down the West Coast, Andrew Yun still considers Washington his host state – and Tacoma his home.

That is what made his win Wednesday at the 20th Sahalee Players Championship so satisfying.

Locked in a duel with Utah native Zachary Blair – and fellow Walker Cup training squad member – Yun survived the fast conditions at Sahalee Country Club best, finishing as the lone golfer under-par for the championship.

Yun’s closing 2-over-par 74 was good enough for a one-stroke victory. He finished with a four-round total of

Yun shoots 75, falls out of lead at Sahalee Players Championship

Back-nine bogeys at the 14th, 15th and 18th holes knocked Tacoma’s Andrew Yun out of the lead on a tough scoring day at the 20th Sahalee Players Championship.

Only four golfers in the field broke par. Yun was not one of them – he shot a 3-over-par 75 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish.

Bo Andrews, a senior at Georgia Tech, shot an even-par 72 to grab a one-stroke lead over Yun, Zachary Blair (72) and Kevin Carrigan (70). Andrews sits at 4-under 212 through three rounds.

The last group tees off Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Five birdies, no bogeys propel RJ Manke into early lead at Ryan Moore tournament

He isn’t even in high school yet, but Lakewood’s RJ Manke showed Tuesday he can hold his own against older competition.

The 14-year-old from Tacoma Country and Golf Club fired a bogey-free round of 5-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the inaugural AJGA Ryan Moore Junior Championship at RMG Club at Oakbrook in Lakewood.

“I didn’t mess up at all, and made some really good putts,” Manke said.

Jefferson Kao, of Walnut, Calif., and Sean Yu, of Beaumont, Calif., are tied for second at 4-under 66. Guillermo Cortina, of Bradenton, Fla., shot 67, and

Yun shoots a pair of under-par rounds (67, 71) to lead 20th Sahalee Players Championship

It has been a while since Andrew Yun has lived in Tacoma, but he still apparently knows how to play golf in the Northwest.

After 36 grueling holes in 90-degree temperatures, Yun has the lead at the 20th Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish on Monday.

Yun, who spent one season at Bellarmine Prep before moving to Chandler, Ariz., shot rounds of 5-under-par 67 in the morning, and 1-under 71 in the afternoon for a 6-under 138 total.

The Stanford graduate leads Jack Perry (5-under 139) by one stroke, and Canadian Adam Svensson (4-under 140) by two

Another round in the 60s earns Feutz a spot at 20th Sahalee Players Championship

University Place’s James Feutz saw his good run of golf to start the summer continue Monday.

Not exempt into the 20th Sahalee Players Championship – arguably the top amateur golf tournament on the West Coast – the Bellarmine Prep graduate and UNLV team member instead grabbed one of the three qualifying spots at The Home Course in Dupont.

Feutz shot a 3-under-par 69 to finish second behind medalist Brian Jung (68), of Corvallis, Ore. Seattle’s Sandy Vaughan (70) collected the final berth when he survived a four-man, sudden-death playoff.

The Sahalee Players Championship, held at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish,
