A former AJGA standout, Moore now gets his own junior-golf tournament

Tournament: 54 holes of stroke play. … 96 boys and girls, ages 12-18. … Four countries, 11 states represented in the field. Forty-one of the golfers are from Washington. … Tee times begin at 6:30 a.m. every round. … Moore, a former two-time Rolex All-American from Cascade Christian, will host a junior golf clinic at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the course.

This week: Travelers Championship, Thursday through Sunday, TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Conn.

Moore’s fourth-round score: 2-under-par 68.

Position: Moore (8-under 272) tied for seventh, four strokes behind winner Ken Duke (12-under 268). Gonzales (2-over 142) and Stanley (3-over 143) missed the cut Friday.

Recap: Moore made a run, getting to 9-under for the tournaments with birdies at the second, seventh and 12th holes. But his championship hopes ended at No. 16, a par 3 where he made a double bogey.

Next for Moore: John Deere Classic starting July 11th at TPC Deere Run at Silvis, Ill.

Position: Moore (6-under 204) is tied for 14th, four strokes behind co-leaders Graham DeLaet, Charley Hoffman and Bubba Watson (10-under 200). Gonzales (2-over 142) and Stanley (3-over 143) missed the cut Friday.

Recap: Moore charged up the leaderboard 27 spots with his stellar move Saturday. And he reached 5-under for the day when he birdied his third par-3 in a row at the 11th hole (9-iron tee shot to center of green, made 20-foot putt). But an untimely three-putt cropped up two holes

Moore’s second-round score: Even-par 70.

Gonzales’ and Stanley’s second-round score: 4-over 74.

Position: Moore (2-under 138) is tied for 41st, eight strokes behind leader Bubba Watson (10-under 130). Gonzales (2-over 142) and Stanley (3-over 143) missed the cut Friday.

Recap: Scoring was tougher Friday, but Moore did something he had not done since the season-opening, full-field Sony Open – make an eagle. His drive on the short par-4 15th hole rolled to the front of the green, and nearly went in. He made the 3-foot putt for eagle.

AJGA bringing ‘Ryan Moore Junior Championship’ to Washington in early July

The American Junior Golf Association is returning to the state of Washington – and is honoring arguably its most accomplished amateur ever.

From July 2-4, the inaugural AJGA’s “Ryan Moore Junior Championship” will be held at RMG Club at Oakbrook in Lakewood.

Moore, the Tacoma native currently in his eighth full season on the PGA Tour, will direct a junior golf clinic on July 2 for The First Tee of South Puget Sound from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Oakbrook.

The tournament and junior golf clinics are free of admission.

Stanley’s first-round score: 1-under 69.

Position: Moore and Gonzales are tied for 34th, and Stanley is tied for 48th – all trailing leader Charley Hoffman (9-under 61).

Recap: Moore missed the cut at last week’s U.S. Open, and wasn’t much better Thursday hitting greens in regulation (10-of-18). But he converted four birdies on par-4 holes, reaching 3-under at one point when he got up and down from 30 yards for birdie at No. 15. But he bogeyed the finishing hole. …

Stanley’s fourth-round score: 8-over-par 78.

Position: Stanley (28-over 308) finished 73rd, 27 strokes behind winner Justin Rose. Moore (16-over 156) missed the cut Saturday.

Recap: After another rough day, at least Stanley left Merion East with his sense of humor. “As many shots as I hit, it was kind of like playing two tournaments in one major,” the Gig Harbor golfer said.
