Peck advances, Packer out at 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links in Virginia

Overcoming a slow start, Olympia’s Cameron Peck still comfortably qualified for match play at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links golf tournament in Lorton, Va.

Starting 5-over through five holes, the Timberline High graduate rallied with four birdies over his final 12 holes to finish off a 1-over-par 71 round at Laurel Hill Golf Club on Tuesday.

Peck (1-under 139) will be the No. 14 seed for match play, and opens with Florida’s Zachary Moore in the first round Wednesday. Canadian Garrett Rank (8-under 132) is the top seed overall.

Weekly Meadow Park skins game: Don’t make it, get out of the way!

When shadows from the overhanging trees start blocking out sunlight, and the course cools, an army of men carrying golf bags make their way to the first tee.

They all collect around the back tee box at Meadow Park’s executive course – also known as the “Williams Nine” – offer a few words, even crack a few one-liners before each of them, in rapid-fire succession, tee off.

It is a 16-some all playing the same hole at the same time.

Peck shoots 68, near top at U.S. Amateur Publinx; Packer opens with 74

Picking up where he left off, Olympia’s Cameron Peck is near the top of the leaderboard at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links in Lorton, Va.

Peck, who won the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur last week, shot a 2-under-par 68 at Laurel Hill Golf Club, and is tied for seventh after the first day of stroke play.

The Timberline High School graduate had six birdies and four bogeys, including a finishing birdie at the par-5 ninth to trail leader Eric Sugimoto, of San Diego, who shot 63, and has a two-stroke lead on the field.

Moore, Stanley will tee off in afternoon wave for first round of British Open

Puyallup’s Ryan Moore and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley won’t be out late enough to see the sun set, but they did draw early-afternoon tee times for the British Open at Muirfield starting Thursday.

Stanley goes off at 4:39 a.m. PDT – 12:39 local time – with Spain’s Alvaro Quiros and Sweden’s Alexander Noren.

Moore is four groups behind Stanley at 5:23 a.m. PDT – 1:23 local time – with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and reigning U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox. Moore and Stenson were group together for the first two rounds of the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club East Course

Lots of birdies, very few bogeys – and Peck crowned 112th PNGA Men’s Amatuer champion

He put his name on the same trophy as Tiger Woods in 2008 – and Olympia’s Cameron Peck did it again Thursday.

Waiting out Hans Reimers’ early hot streak, then turning on the jets at the end of the morning round, Peck finished off his stellar week with a 7-and-6 victory in the championship finals of the 112th Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort on the Oregon coast.
