Overcoming a slow start, Olympia’s Cameron Peck still comfortably qualified for match play at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links golf tournament in Lorton, Va.

Starting 5-over through five holes, the Timberline High graduate rallied with four birdies over his final 12 holes to finish off a 1-over-par 71 round at Laurel Hill Golf Club on Tuesday.

Peck (1-under 139) will be the No. 14 seed for match play, and opens with Florida’s Zachary Moore in the first round Wednesday. Canadian Garrett Rank (8-under 132) is the top seed overall.

Auburn’s Sean Packer got hot early, making birdies on his first three holes to get to 1-over for the tournament, and well within the cut-line. But on the long par-4 fifth hole, he hit his approach shot in the hay outlining a front greenside bunker, which led to a triple bogey.

Packer bogeyed the seventh and eighth holes en route to a 75. He finished with a two-round total of 9-over 149, tying for 96th.
