Picking up where he left off, Olympia’s Cameron Peck is near the top of the leaderboard at the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links in Lorton, Va.

Peck, who won the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur last week, shot a 2-under-par 68 at Laurel Hill Golf Club, and is tied for seventh after the first day of stroke play.

The Timberline High School graduate had six birdies and four bogeys, including a finishing birdie at the par-5 ninth to trail leader Eric Sugimoto, of San Diego, who shot 63, and has a two-stroke lead on the field.

Lurking right outside the cut-line for match play is Auburn’s Sean Packer, who rallied to shot 74, and is tied for 83rd.

Sitting at 6-over, Packer rolled in a 15-foot putt for birdie at the seventh hole, then finished his round getting up and down from in front of the green at No. 9 for another birdie, making a 4-footer.
