It is the first step toward playing in a U.S. Open – and this year it happens near the Canadian border.

After years of playing in the South Sound, local qualifying for the U.S. Open will take place Monday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club – with seven spots up for grabs in the 111-player field.

Some of the notable players in the field include Blaine’s Jeff Coston; former U.S. Mid-Amateur finalist Dan Whitaker, of Cle Elum; past Washington State Open champions Brian Thornton, Tim Feenstra, Josh Immordino; ex-Pacific Northwest section players of the year in Ryan Benzel and Corey Prugh; even two-time Tacoma City Amateur champion Sean Packer.

Live updates of the 18-hole rounds can be found on the Washington State Golf Association’s championships’ account – @WSGAChampions.

Here is the list of tee times Monday.

The 2013 U.S. Open is being held June 13-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Penn.
