This week: Shell Houston Open, Thursday through Sunday, Redstone Golf Club, Humble, Texas.
Stanley’s first-round score: Even-par 72.
Kelly’s first-round score: 1-over 73.
Putnam’s first-round score: 3-over 75.
Position: Stanley is tied for 64th, Kelly is tied for 88th and Putnam is tied for 121st – all trailing leader D.A. Points (64).
Recap: Much like the course it is favorably compared to – Augusta National Golf Club, site of the Masters – Redstone is a course fair enough to score on, but difficult enough to expose shoddy play. Stanley bogeyed his first hole after he air-mailed his approach shot over the green, birdied a pair of par-5 holes (No. 15, No. 8), but he also hit a tee shot in the pond at another par 5 at No. 4, and made bogey. … Kelly nearly reached the green on the long par-5 13th hole, got up and down from 60 feet for birdie and was at 2-under for the day. He then proceeded to bogey three of the next four holes – two in which he hit tee shots in sand bunkers. … Putnam played his first PGA Tour round in 91/2 months, missed four birdie putts of 14 feet or closer in his first six holes – and then the fireworks began on his final nine holes. Sandwiching back-to-back double bogeys at No. 5 and No. 6 (hit in water on both holes) were three birdies, including two at the par-5 fourth and eighth holes.
Tee times Friday: Kelly at 6:30 a.m. PDT off the 10th tee, Stanley at 11:10 a.m. PDT off the first tee, and Putnam at 12:20 p.m. PDT off the first tee.
