This week: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Wednesday through Sunday, The Golf Club at Dove Mountain, Marana, Ariz.
First-round match: Lost to No. 7 seed Jim Furyk, 4 and 2, in the Bobby Jones Bracket.
Details: The two golfers were all square when they returned to the course Friday to complete their match. And one of the real underrated turning points was at No. 7 – their first hole of the day – where Furyk was in trouble, but his a wedge approach for a third shot on the par 4 within 6 feet, and made the par-saving putt for a halve. After that, Furyk won the next four holes (he birdied three of them while Moore had a pair of bogeys) to go 4-up. Moore did curl in a 10-foot birdie putt at No. 15 to stay alive, but his chip from in front of the 16th green rolled way past, and his 12-footer to save par slid to the right – and he conceded the hole, and match. It was Moore’s first opening-round exit since 2010 when he lost to Ernie Els, 4 and 3.
Next for Moore: WGC-Cadillac Championships starting March 7 at TPC Blue Monster at Doral in Miami, Fla.
