This week: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Thursday through Sunday, Pebble Beach, Spyglass GC and Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Calif.

Kelly’s first-round score: 1-over-par 73 at Pebble Beach.

Gonzales’ first-round score: 5-over 77 at Pebble Beach.

Position: Kelly is tied for 95th, and Gonzales is tied for 145th – all trailing co-leaders Russell Knox and Hunter Mahan (66).

Recap: You won’t see a calmer day around Monterey Bay, and at Pebble Beach than Thursday, making the layout prime for low scoring. After an early birdie, Kelly was 1-under through 11 holes, made a bogey at No. 12 (did not get up and down from the back of the green) and then did something professional golfers rarely do at the 12th hole – make double bogey from the middle of the fairway with a wedge in his hand. His second shot from 120 yards went far left and over the green. He did birdie the 15th (wedge approach to 3 feet). … So far it has been an unhappy reunion for Gonzales on the PGA Tour. In eight rounds, he has broken par once – a 2-under 70 in the third round of the Humana Challenge. And he was all over the lot Thursday (three bogeys, two double bogeys). His day unraveled early at No. 3 when he hit his drive on the narrow par 4 so far left, he was issued a penalty stroke, and made double bogey to fall to 2-over.

Tee times Friday: Kelly at 9:28 a.m. PST off No. 10 tee at Monterey Peninsula CC, and Gonzales at 10:12 a.m. PST off No. 10 tee at Monterey Peninsula CC.
