This week: Farmers Insurance Open, Thursday through Sunday, Torrey Pines North and South Courses, La Jolla, Calif.
Stanley’s second-round score: 4-over-par 76 on the North Course.
Gonzales’ second-round score: 6-over 78 on the South Course.
Kelly’s second-round score: Withdrew prior to tee time.
Position: Stanley (7-over 151) finished a solo 145th, and Gonzales (8-over 152) tied for 148th, missing the cut. Tiger Woods (11-under 133) is the tournament leader.
Recap: Not at all the showing Stanley ever envisioned returning to the event he nearly won, and lost in a sudden-death playoff a year ago. He really struggled in two rounds – eight bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. One of those double bogeys came on the uphill par-3 12th on Friday where he missed right of the green, and did not get up and down. He then made four bogeys over his final 13 holes. … The back nine of the South Course is a real test, and Gonzales started on No. 10 on Friday – and bogeyed the first four holes en route to an opening-nine 42. He made all pars on the second nine. … Citing flu-like symptoms, Kelly withdrew from the tournament Friday.
Next: Stanley is set to defend his title at next week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona. Also in the field are Kelly and Puyallup’s Ryan Moore.
