This week: Humana Challenge, Thursday through Sunday, PGA West Resort (Palmer, Nicklaus, La Quinta CC), La Quinta, Calif.

Stanley’s first-round score: 5-under-par 67 at Nicklaus.

Kelly’s and Gonzales’ first-round score: 1-over 73 at Palmer.

Position: Stanley is tied for 29th, and Kelly and Gonzales are tied for 135th – all trailing co-leaders Robert Castro, James Hahn and Jason Kokrak (63).

Recap: This is a birdie-making tournament, and this was a round that could have easily gotten away from Stanley, who made the turn at 1-over after an 18th-hole double bogey. But the Bellarmine Prep product made six birdies over his final nine holes (shot a nine-hole score of 30) to shoot back up the leaderboard nearly 100 spots. …Kelly made his season debut Thursday, looked sharp for a short stretch (four birdies in six holes) but faltered over his final nine holes, making three bogeys and a double bogey. The worst came when he hit his drive out of bounds at No. 4 and had to go back and hit another tee shot, leading to a double bogey. … Gonzales’ day was largely uneventful (three bogeys, two birdies). He did nearly hole out a wedge approach at No. 16, leading to a short birdie putt. And he got up and down from 30 yards in the rough for his final birdie at No. 18 – all before making two final-nine bogeys.

Tee times Friday: Kelly at 9:50 a.m. PDT, Stanley at 10:20 a.m. PDT and Gonzales at 10:30 a.m. PDT. All go off the first tee.
