This week: The 141st British Open, Thursday through Sunday, Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club, Lancashire, England.

Stanley’s first-round score: Even-par 70.

Kelly’s first-round score: 2-over 72.

Position: Stanley is tied for 37th, and Kelly is tied for 80th – all trailing leader Adam Scott (64), who tied a course record Thursday.

Recap: It is a British Open, so the usual high winds and heavy rain pummeled the field Thursday, right? Wrong. Conditions could not have been better, especially in the morning – making Stanley’s opening 70 acceptable but not thrilling. The Bellarmine Prep product nearly started his day with the biggest bang as his tee shot on the first hole – a par 3 – hit the flagstick after one hop and nearly dropped for an ace. Instead it ricochet far enough back he settled for a par – then made three consecutive bogeys after that. The round had its testy moments, too, as Stanley and his partners, Stephen Ames and Robert Rock, were put on the clock for slow play. Also, a patron’s cellular phone went off as the trio was teeing off at No. 12, causing a stir. From tee to green, Stanley was fantastic, tied for fourth in the field in greens hit in regulation (15 of 18). But he struggled on the slow greens – he has three one-putts, limiting his birdies. … Kelly has almost the opposite effort as Stanley. His ball-striking was off and on, and his putting saved him from higher than a 72. The Central Kitsap High graduate battled back from a double bogey-bogey stretch at Nos. 3 and 4 by taking advantage of the vulnerable holes with birdies – the reachable par-5 seventh and 11th hole, and the downwind ninth hole – to get back to even-par. He had late bogeys at Nos. 13 and 16.

Tee times Friday: Kelly at 2:59 a.m. PDT, and Stanley at 4:59 a.m. PDT. Both start off the first tee.
