Will Olympic Club give a chaser a chance? Not enough of one

Another fantastic weather day in south San Francisco (technically we are in Daly City, Calif.) for today’s final round of the 112th U.S. Open.

Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk lead.

Will they be there at the end of the day?

A Sunday score is out there because the Olympic Club has softened up ever so slightly. Today’s temperatures are down. A lingering marine layer might help keep some moisture in the fairways and greens. And the finishing stretch – the 16th, 17th and 18th holes – will give birdie opportunities.

Yet, I don’t know if THAT score is out there

Two INTERESTING, stressful days in East Bay, U.S. Open

Never been one to chintz on “Green Scene” updates, especially from something as crazy, as massive and as foretelling as a U.S. Open (which, folks, will be in Pierce County in three SHORT years).

These past two days, thought, it has been impossible to provide updates. The reason? Rental-car vandalism and laptop burglary.

On Wednesday night, as colleague/sports columnist John McGrath and I sat at a restaurant for dinner (click here to see where not to eat) in Fremont, Calif. – 20 miles north of San Jose along Hwy. 880 – a car of thieves were making the rounds in the parking lots. Four cars were hit in the span of 90 minutes.

The rear-passenger window in our sports utility vehicle was smashed. Both laptops, hidden on the floor, were gone.

Our problems became two-fold: 1, How do we replace a vehicle we rented back in Tacoma? 2, What is the soonest time frame we could get new laptops sent to us from headquarters?

US Open update: Stanley posts a solid 73

SAN FRANCISCO – Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley is beginning to trust his golf game again.

A 3-over-par 73 to begin the 112th U.S. Open today might not offer the fullest proof of that process. But glance at some of the other scores posted – Phil Mickelson’s 76 and Masters champion Bubba Watson’s 78 highlight a few of the first-day disasters – and what Stanley accomplished seems pretty solid.

His 73 was his best opening round score in a U.S. Open since he shot 70 in 2009 at Bethpage Black.

The proof is more in his demeanor. He is that calm, serious,

Stanley’s favorite hole at Olympic Club: “I like the back nine a lot – it kind of sets up well to my eye. You have to go a lot of right-to-left … on the holes, and that is the direction the wind goes as
