Sad news that a few sources have confirmed tonight: John (Jeff) Harbottle III, who designed two of the Northwest’s crown jewel golf course in the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain and Palouse Ridge, died today in California. He was 53.

Here is Harbottle’s biography off his design Website.

Details are a bit fuzzy (since I just learned of the news tonight). Will follow up on it Friday. A real big blow to the golf-design community, and to one of the big names out of Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

John (Jeff) was an amazing man. He was a friend who shared his generous gift of life, joy and friendship, in a genuine way. Jeff and I were friends from High School. I remember that, without hesitation, Jeff took the time to share his personal advice with my son, when my son was considering choices of a future career. He took time for others to help as he could. I sincerely appreciate all that Jeff shared with all of us.
Jeff was a good man to his core. He will be missed, and remembered for the good person he was. Jeff lives in my heart and my memories. Jeff, here’s to you….a friend forever. George Howell
