Monday is when 2012 U.S. Open berths are all settled

Two U.S. Open berths are up for grabs Monday at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Oregon.

This week: The Memorial Tournament, Thursday through Sunday, Muirfield Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio.

Moore’s first-round score: 2-under-par 70.

Stanley’s first-round score: 3-over 75.

Position: Moore is tied for 11th, and Stanley is tied for 88th – all trailing leader Scott Stallings (66).

Recap: This course isn’t that easy, but Moore has sure made it seem that way lately. He has shot an under-par round in eight of his past nine opportunities, including Thursday. No. 15 at Palouse Ridge will always be Harbottle III’s golf hole

Officials at Washington State University, the home of John Harbottle III-designed Palouse Ridge, say they will honor the late golf-course architect. Here is their release:

Washington State University today dedicated the 15th hole of its award-winning Palouse Ridge Golf Course in memory of the course’s architect, John Harbottle III, of Tacoma, who died last week while working in California.

Harbottle III memorial set for Saturday in Tacoma

The memorial of local golf architect John “Jeff” Harbottle III, who died in California on Thursday, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Tacoma.

Following the service will be a reception at Tacoma Country and Golf Club where the 53-year-old was a member.

Harbottle’s works include the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain (2006 U.S. Public Links, 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur) and Palouse Ridge (2012 NCAA Women’s West Regional), as well as more than 50 renovations on existing courses.

Golf-course designer Harbottle dead at 53

John “Jeff” Harbottle III was known to have a heart of gold, a passion for golf and a keen mind for building world-class courses any level of player could enjoy.

Harbottle, a rising star in the world of golf-course architecture, died suddenly Thursday in California. He was 53.

“He was healthy, happy and it wouldn’t ever enter your mind this would happen to him,” said Rich Friend, the head professional at Tacoma Country and Golf Club, where the Harbottle family holds membership. “This is tough on everybody.”
