Backed by birdie binge, Packer captures ‘Champions of Champions’ title

Before his first-round 79 was in the books, Bonney Lake’s Sean Packer already had another plan brewing.

Very analytical, and a tinkerer by nature, a few adjustments – and a career-best 66 at The Home Course – had Packer back in the winner’s circle at the third annual Washington State Golf Association’s “Champion of Champions” tournament in DuPont.

Packer started his final round Wednesday in the wind and rain with six birdies in his first seven holes. He went out and caught first-round leader Craig Larson (last-day 79), of Tacoma, who began the day with an 11-stroke lead over the

Position: Moore (4-under 284) tied for eighth, five strokes behind winner Ben Curtis (9-under 280). Kelly and Putnam missed the cut Friday.

Recap: Easily the Cascade Christian’s best showing in a final round this season as it appears he is finding really good form heading into the meat of the schedule. Moore went bogey-free on the final nine holes, making birdies at No. 11 (9-iron approach to 7 feet) and No. 14 (two-putt from 66 feet on par 5). Coupled with

This week: Valero Texas Open, Thursday through Sunday, TPC San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas.

Moore’s third-round score: 1-under-par 71.

Position: Moore (1-under 215) is tied for 15th, eight strokes behind leader Ben Curtis (9-under 207). Kelly (11-over 155) and Putnam (12-over 156) missed the cut.

Recap: A real positive development for Moore, who is one of just 20 golfers under-par after three rounds. And with the winds up again, he was also one of just 19 professionals in red figures for his round. Moore overcame an early double bogey with a strong finish – birdies at No. 16 (17-foot putt)
