This week: WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships, Wednesday through Sunday, Ritz-Carlton Golf Club of Dove Mountain, Marana, Ariz.
Seed: 13th in the Bobby Jones Bracket.
Second round: Lost to No. 5 seed Brandt Snedeker, 2 and 1.
Recap: More than half the double digit-seeded victors from Wednesday were eliminated in the second round. And most of them, including Stanley, came in the Jones bracket (4 of 5 lost). This was a much-anticipated rematch of the Farmers Insurance Open sudden-death playoff in which Snedeker toppled the Bellarmine Prep graduate after two holes. And the match was close throughout. Stanley pulled even with a 16-foot birdie putt at No. 11, then had a 1-up lead with a par on the next hole. But he struggled in the closing stretch with three consecutive bogeys at No. 15 (tee shot landed in a cactus, third shot went to back fringe), No. 16 (6-iron tee shot air-mailed the green) and No. 17 (both players failed to hit the green in regulation). Stanley had a chance to stay alive at the 17th, but his 7-foot par-saving putt stayed on the right edge and spun out. “We’ve got some real history going,” Snedeker told reporters afterward. “He’s a great guy. I played really good today.”
